It was Milwaukee's last turn at

It looked like the end, and Mil-
waukee's all-time record crowd

Athletics 4-0 as the Yankees edged

fell four games off the pace, losing
to Washington 3-2. Detroit and Bos
ton divided a day-night double
header, the Tigers winning the
nightcap 4-3 after the Red Sox had
taken the opener 3-1.
Cincinnati's Redlegs climbed In
to a three-way tie for third place
with Milwaukee and Philadelphia,
sweeping both ends of a twl-night
twin bill from the Phillies 2-1 and
4-3 to spoil Terry Moore's mana
gerial debut. Chicago's Cubs
knocked off the last-place Pitts

Boxing Promoter Mack Lillard
told the Herald and News this
morning that he was seeking an
opponent for Gcorglc Price (or
the main event of next Friday
night's ring card at the Armory.
The local matchmaker has been
seeking some top notch opponent
for the young Merrill bomber, who
has just been released from the
United States Navy.
Price, who is a welterweight,
vill probably be lined up with
anotlicr 147-pountler from either
Los Angeles or Seattle since Lil
lard is scouting the entire Pacific
Coast for a suitable fighter to
meet Price, who Is now being
managed by Roy Drake.
Price has been training for the
past month or so since his dis
charge from the service where he
established a sensational ring rec
ord, including six service and AAU
championships.
Lillard also plans on using sev
eral of the top local ring warriors
on the supporting card against
some outside talent If the suitable
opponents can be found.
Ralph Weiser will probably be
pitted against another pugilist in
the semi-main and KO Bobby
Barney could also be on the pro
gram of Lillard can find some one
to fight him.

week, will be preparing for war

They're already involved in a
series of struggles with the NFL

for attention on the television
screens against the- U.S. college
teams.
The teams of the Eastern Can
ada Big Pour will reach the TV
screens in the United States in a
series of 13 Saturday afternoon
broadcasts starting Aug. 28.
The NBC, shut out of U.S. foot
hall this year, is gambling that
Canadian football will appeal to
American viewers.
Most of the Canadian teams are
scheduled to start training Fri
day. The B.C. Lions, a newly-organized

As all the Pacific Coast League
managers will tell you, Holly
wood's ball club has a psycholog
ical bulge because of its speed
afield and on the bases. San Diego
probably excels the Stars in pitch
ing and hitting, but fellows such
as Carlos Bernier and Tommy Sat-
fel can upset the opposition with
their, speed.
Hollywood beat Portland Thurs
day night, 43, and beating the
Beavers, a seventh place club, has
been hard for the Stars all season.
The PCL champs had to go 10 in
nings and two were out when
Jack Phlllipj smashed . a hot
grounder through Rocky Krsnich's
legs with the bases loaded.
Were it not for Bernier's dang
er on the bases, Phillips wouldn't
have had the chance to be the hero,
for Portland catcher Joe Rossi
whipped the ball to Hank Arft at
first and Hollywood's Dale Long
was trapped off the bag. But Arft,
Instead of running Long toward
second, was afraid Bernier would
break for home and make it ahead
of even a lightning throw so he
fired the ball to thirty and Long
scrambled back to first safely.
Lino Donoso, the ever-slingin'
Cuban, racked up his 15th win as
he took over in the 10th for Jim
Walsh, who had relieved starter
Mel Queen In the eighth. The los
er was Dick Waibel, who hadn't
been scored on for 27 innings until
the Stars dented his record in the
first inning.
Seattle rallied from defeat with
a five-run ninth inning and
whipped Oakland, 7-4. Lefty Tom
my Byrne went all the way for
the Rainiers, while Oakland used
Don Ferrarese, Harry Nicholas
and Chris Van Cuyk, with Van
Cuyk the loser. Seattle collected
12 hits. Doubles by Clarence Mad
dern, Joe Reich and Tommy Byrne
highlighted the big ninth inning.
Byrne fanned 12 and gave up only
two walks.
