Swedish Educator Studies
American School Methods

study vocational training programs
in this country, Dr. Karl-Em
Wandell was in Klamath Palls
briefly between scheduled visits to
various universities and other
schools selected in the planned
itinerary.
The young educator (in his
early thirties) is currently teach
ing at the College of Commerce in
Oerebro, about 100 miles from
Stockholm.
His background, of varied exper
ience, includes YMCA work, and
he will represent Sweden at an
important Y meeting in Paris nest
year. During World War II he
was oflicial "host" to all allied
fliers who fell or sought asylum
in Sweden.
Dr. Wandell showed keen inter
est in the USA generally but in
specific reference to "why he was
here," stated: "My research pri

"In Sweden we teachers often
have a feeling that we do not
know what the companies want us
to teach. To us you have much to
ofler in this scope of our re
search, since many of your schools
are in constant touch with per
sonnel directors.
'Of special Interest to me is the
cooperation existing between
schools and companies evidenced
in the part time employment of
pupils in all types of business. In
Sweden we have only tried this
for those who are going to be
retailers.

fishing Pact !

Committee aproved Tuesday a bill
to effectuate a fisheries conserva
tion compact among the United
States, Canada and Japan in north
Pacific waters.
Representatives of the Interior
Department and fishery interests
endorsed the measure, as they did
at a Senate Commerce committee
hearing Monday,
The three-nation agreement was
signed at Tokyo May 9, 1952. The
pending legislation would perfect
the mechanism for this country's
participation in joint studies and
regulations.

missioners of the compact, who al
so operates the California Pack
ing Corp., pointed out that the in
ternational commission meets in
Victoria, British Columbia, next
fall and that American members
needed the same status as those
from Canada and Japan.
The compact contains agree
ments by the signatory countries
to abstain from exploiting speci
fied fish principally halibut, sal
mon and herring which already
are being caught in maximum,
numbers consistent with conser
vation practices.
For instance, Japan agrees to
abstain from fishing for salmon,
halibut and herring in certain wat-
ters of the American Pacific coast
and Canada agrees to abstain
from fishing for salmon in cer
tain waters of the Bering Sea.

graduate students for immediate
employment.
"I am impressed with the regu
lar meetings and discussions be
tween teachers and business man
agers . . . and that teachers here
are able to acquire first-hand
knowledge of what employers ex
pect through personal experience
during vacations as workers in
offices and shops.
"Many helpful ideas that I will
take back, were gained from ob
serving your social work proce
dure, which develops common
sense and responsibility in your
students. But you have more time
for such things because it is not
compulsory for you (as for us)
to learn different languages. In
addition, your students have the
Satuday free. In my school, all
are required to take English, Ger
man and French. And those who
plan to be advanced secretaries
study Spanish, too.
"Employers in Sweden are very
much interested in this social
work to the extent of spending
a lot of money on welfare pro
grams. The results have been good
and we seldom have a strike:
"I want to emphasize that our
two countries have almost the
same problems to solve. We are
doing much research in fields you
have already covered and vice
versa. We now realize that if we
try to solve our problems alone,
we lose time and energy that could
be used more productively. In my
opinion, we must have more ex
change of experience than we
have had- in the past."
Since his arrival in the United
States June 3, Dr. Wandell has
studied by invitation at the Uni-
versity of Notre Dame and the
University of Michigan.
After a possible stop at Stan
ford while in California, he will
visit Northwestern University in
Illinois on his way east where he
plans to continue his research
at Columbia University and sever
al schools of business education
before leaving New York for Sweden.

swimming pool. David Seed, who
has been specializing as a gymnast
and in diving work at the Univers
ity of California, will instruct three
classes a day for 10 days.
Those Interested, who missed the
11:15 a.m. opening -sessions today,
are invited to enroll at 6 p.m. to
day or at 11:15 a.m. Thursday,
according to Ella Redkey, manager
of the pool.

Lake Tragedy Kills Twelve
others.
Police said last night they were
MONTREAL W Eight or nine
children were missing today in a
mountain lake northwest of here
where at least IS tots were
drowned when an overloaded pleas
ure motorboat capsized yesterday.
The bodies of three girls and a
boy were recovered before dark
ness suspended search operations
last night. Two adults and several
other children were rescued.
The tragedy occurred as about
62 Montreal Negro children 5 to 12
years old romped happily at a
picnic on the shore of Lake of
Two Mountains, uo miles northwest
of the city.
Jack Seligmau, a Montreal man
who has a cottago near He Bizard,
offered to take the youngsters on
boat rides around the lake. On the
third trip, he said, water started i
splashing over the side of the
heavily loaded boat. The children
panicked, some Jumped overboard
and the boat overturned.
Seligman and Jack Harrison, a
camp counselor also in the boat
rescued several children. Bus driv
ers who had brought the children
to the picnic and a Sea Seoul saved

Octavio Flores, 19, was feeling
pretty chipper today and very
much relieved.
Flores and Lupe Perez, 17, were
wrestling yesterday when Perez
playfully pointed a .33 revolver he
thought was unloaded at Octavio
and pulled the trigger.
The pistol belched smoke and
flame and Flores crumpled to the
ground holding his stomach and
gasping.
But all the doctor at a local
hospital did about it was place a
small strip of adhesive tape on
the youth's abdomen and tell him
to go home.
A Navy-style web belt stopped
the bullet from point-blank range.
The slug was found between
Flores' belt and his khaki trousers,
Flores had a sorely bruised midsection.
