Yanks Becoming
Seriously Worried
By GAYLK TALBOT
NEW YORK UV-There sre not
likely to be any general expres
sions ol regret from the rest ol
the American League at news that
the Yankees aro becoming serious'
ly worried. A more popular re
action probably would bo Ilia I It's
about time. The live-lime world
champions are not universally
loved and admired
A spy close to the scene reports
that there are unmistakable traces
ol gloom among the athletes at
they head toward atlll another cru
clal aeries with the leading Cleve
land Indians out West this com
ing weekend, tie sdda that, lor the
first time, Caacy Stengel's high
rollers are beginning to look over
tired and a little elderly under the
burning sun.
It seems to hsve dawned sud
denly upon the champs thst Uie
race Is drswing toward the hall
way mark and they are live games
out of lirst place with no help in
sight from any source, Including
their Isrm system. They never be
fore have been In anything resem
bling; their present plight since
Stengel began his record mana-
geilal run.
It la not so much that the Yanks
are falling to win their share. They
have, as a matter ol fact, won 14
ol the 30 games they have played
since June 3. Bui, during the same
period, ihe torrid Indians have set
a 15-6 pace, thus adding, a full
game to their advantage, and the
Chicago White Box nave shown no
signs whatever of loitering. This
is an unusual experience lor the
champions, and It appears to have
been a disconcerting one.
Our personal prophet of doom
for the Yankeea places much sig
nificance In the fsct that they no
longer seem able to win double
heiulers. They have spill nine In
succession, and that, he says, Is
an accepted symptom of lack of
pitching depth.
A close Inspection of the record
of Allle Reynolds, the veteran ace
who must produce brilliantly If the
Yanks are to pull out their sixth
flag, does not hold forth any great
promise. Though the Superchlef
holds a fine 8-1 victory record at
this point, lie Is having his trou
bles. He has finished only 3 of 10
games ho has started, and he has
needed help in winning each of his
last five decisions.
JBul for the comforting presence
or Johnny sain In hia bullpen, Sten
gel plainly would be In poor ahape.

Ihe announcement by league

Tuesday.
The committee gave up in Its
campaign lor $404,000 to insure co
tinued operation of the club after
less Ulan 13,000 was pledged dur
ing Uie week of solicitation. The
league had taken over the Spokane
franchise a week earlier when
owner Roy Hotchkiss said he could
not continue a losing operation.
Calgary's president Bus Lacey

Monday, and split up Uie ciuo s
bank account of 8jo among the
IS man squad. A S3. 150 deposit
with Uie minor league president,
George Trautman, also will go to

Reaction of other owners was
a mixture of relief and determina

league could finish out Uie season
intact. . ,'
Tne loss of Calgary 'left Uie Ed
monton Eskimos at the "end of

said "H won't allect us a bit."
Ducey described Uie Eskimos'
as "in a very solid position," and
said other teams would continue
to gel a 6600 guarantee to helo

is Uie only exception made to Uie
league's rule ol Uie home team
keeping all gate receipts.
Snokane's departure from organ

dozen or so years after Uie In

league attendance record.
Civic interests there say they
will do the spade work this year
to Insure the re-entry of Spokane
into the WIL next season.
Several oiher teams, notably
Lewlston and Salem, have been
hard-pressed financially this sea-
sor but Improving weather and
promises of community support
have helped them over the hump.
So serious was Uie overall prob

met about 10 days ago in Spokane
to decide whether the entire
league would have to disband. The
decision was to continue, with Uie
hope Spokane and Calgary would

They didn't.
