Cordon said today it will probably
be late this month before the While
House makes a final decision on
a tariff commission recommenda
tion that quotas be placed on al
sike clover seed imports, wilh a
duty increase for above-quota im
ports. The tariff commission report is
the result of an investigation which
it conducted at the request of the
Klamath Basin growers of domes
tic alsike seed to determine it Im
ports of alsike are of sufficient
quantity to injure the domestic in
dustry. While the report has not been
made public, it was learned that it
is in line with an appeal made to
Senator Cordon and Rep. Sam
Coon of-Baker by the Klamath Ba
sin producers who asked that trie
commission recommend safe
guarding of the domestic industry
by imposing a 730.0O0 pound Import
quota, level, the existing two-cent
tariff be increased to six cents.
Neither the White House nor the
commission would confirm pub
licly the nature of the recommen
dations made to the president last
reek. and Cordon said he was not
fkt liberty to do, so. but the 'fact
that the senior senator, has urged
favorable action on the report
would indicate that the recommen
dation agrees with the Klamath Ba
sin growers' request which aims at
securing relief against Increasing
Canadian Imports.

of growing things, modeled by Don Sloan, Klamath Falls who
learned his subjects first hand while in the, South Seas. Lono
sits atop a pedestal wrapped Tapa cloth, made from the bark
of trees. Sloan holds witch doctor's mask, from the Solo
mon Islands.
Hard Work Involved In KF
Realtor's Unusual Hobby

A "hefty" hobby occupies nu
merous of Don Sloan's waking
hours.
Sloan. Klamath Falls realtor, Is
believed to be one of two persons
in the Northwest who sculptures
stoneware. His unusual exhibit of
South Pacitic art is now on dis
play at the Art Center, 1227 Main
Street.
Sculpturing in stoneware is one
of the lesser known forms of art
and one that demands the pa
tience of Job, the eye of an eagle,
the gentleness of a woman's hands
and a good strong muscle.
Tbc process is long and tedious
from the mixing of clay with
chemicals, through the firing, cur
ing and polishing of the completed
figure.
The result of the process Is a
true stone, comparable to volcanic
throw-off. When once hardened
the stoneware resists a cold chisel.
Sloan makes a modeling clay
moael, compared to the sketch an
artist makes for picture, A plaster
of parts mould Is then made and
this mould is filled with a liquid
mixture of "coecal," poured into
the mould in liquid form. This Is
the master copy, which is then
worked Into its final shape and
form,
A sectional mould of similar ma
terial Is then made from the mas
ter model. This fits around the
original, like a three dimensional
jig-saw puzzle. It can be removed
at will, then re-assembled in hoi
low form. Into this hollow form is
packed an especially prepared ma
terial. composed of a chemical
breakdown of actual stone and
other ingrediants. The. heavy clay
like mass is crowded 'and packed
into me nouow.
The mould Is then removed and
the figure is set aside to cure for
six months. Temperature and hu
midlty is carefully controlled and
corrected each week for six long
moiuns.
"When the work is "ripe." It Is
then given a final texture by a
mechanical process to work out
ouooies, cracks and other IrregU'
larlties. . '

perature is brought slowly up to
2376 degrees P., hotter than the
inside of an erupting volcano.
The figures are kept at this
white hot heat for two weeks, then
cooled slowly. The product is then
hard as granite, a true stone in
every sense.
It Is the shape aud texturo of
Uie finished work that lends lad
nation to this unusual form of
sculpturing.
Sloan has had no art school
training but his native sense of
line and form Is evident in each
piece of work he completes.
He became interested In this art
during a five-year sojourn in the
South Pacillc where he was asso
ciated with the Bishop Museum
In Honolulu, doing work In an
thropology. It was there he became fas
cinated with the lives and habits
of the natives of Samoa, the Gil
bert Islands, tho Solomons and
elsewhere. He is an accomplished
linguist ol native dialects and upon
his return to this country, he
wrote a "Book of the Month," best
seller, "The Shadow Catcher."
Volumes of this Interesting work
are on the shelves ot the city and
county libraries. He was the only
white man in the Immediate area
where he worked and he had time
to learn the "feel." of the work
he Is currently doing.
Sloan, a resident of Klamath
Falls since 1932 lives at Cove
Point.
Among the outstanding Items In
his exhibit, open to the public until
June 20. are 200-pound Susu Kele.
