MANILA I The aurreuder of
Luis Taruc, colorful leader ol the
Communist-directed Huk rebels,
was hailed today as a major step
in President Ramon Magsaysay's
campaign against the Huks.
Army combat teams surged
through the Jungles o southern
Luton seeking the remnants of
Taruc's elite guard while Carlos
P, Romulo, a top presidential aide,
nailed the surrender as the end of
the rebellion.
Chief target now is Jesus Lava,
whom the army considers the top
Communist in the Philippines.
Taruc, 40, who repeatedly has
slipped through army traps In the
past six years, surrendered to a
Manila Times reporter, Benico
Aquino, who carried a letter from
Magsaysay. The meeting on a
dusty road north of here climaxed
months of negotiations.
Terms ol the surrender were not
disclosed.
Taruc had no alternative but to
surrender," Magsaysay comment
ed. "He was cornered by the
armed forces."
Unless granted amnesty, Taruc
faces trial on charges ranging
from murder to sedition.
The surrender was a major step
in Magsaysay's efforts to bring
about a peaceful settlement of the
Huk uprising. Although a bitter foe
of the rebels as a field command-
as defense chief and as presi.
dent, Magsaysay lone has advo
cated resettling the rebels on sew
ly developed land.
At Kansas City, Romulo, Mag
saysay s personal envoy, said:
'There now will be peace and
order throughout the Philippines.
Taruc Is the man who had the fol
lowing. With his surrender, the re
bellion is ended."
Taruc was taken to army head
quarters at Camp Murray on the
outskirts of Manila. He was photo
graphed and given a physical ex
amination. A doctor described him
as "healthier than the averase
man."
Taruc later was taken to the res
idence of Maj. Gra. Jesus Vargas,
army chief of staff, and introduced
to Mrs. Vargas. Said Taruc:
"I am here because of your chil
dren and my children. I want them
to spend the future in peace. It is
doubtful If we could have peace in
a hundred years If I did sot give
up."
Taruc, known as the Swcrr.D
Fox, surrendered to Aquino on the
busy Quezon highway which skirts
the Candaba swamps a rebel lair.
The rooming sun outlined the fig
ure of the long-sought rebel, stand
ing alone at the roadside.
"I pulled off the road and he
met me with a big smile." Aquino
said. "I said, 'Luis Taruc. do you
unconditionally accept President
Magsaysay's terms?'."
'I accept,' Taruc answered
and his grip on my hand tight-
enea.
But a staccato burst from an
army machine gun in a clump of
bushes SCO feet away brought
weeping villagers swarming from
their nearby huts. They hid Taruc
until the firing stopped.
Aquino said the Huk leader soon
reappeared and the oalr raced in
tne newsman's car to waiting se
curity guards farther down the
road. They then drove to Camp
Murray.
The reporter said he carefully
avoided the word "surrender"
while he was a go-between for
Magsaysay. Aquino said Taruc
had agreed to accept the authority

ity prisoners housed in the new
1 million dollar prison build
ing located outside the walls of
the main penitentiary. They were
the first inmates to take advant
age of the semi-freedom allowed

Cottonware was sentenced for
auto theft from Castle Rock. Mc
Donald was serving time on a Kent
burglary conviction. Both were due
for release this summer, prison of

Be Presented
A public service preview of high
fidelity tape and disc recordings
of past local concerts and musical
events will be presented to the
public Tuesday, May IS, from 5:30
through 9:30 p.m. at the Louis R.
Mann Piano Company, 130 North
Seventh, This is being done in an
swer to requestseto hear the work
of artists, students, teachers and
patrons of local music.
The recordings were made at the
performances by the Dedrick re
cording studio. Bod Dedrick and
Harry Namitx will play the tapes
and discs at a . continuous show
ing, so listening time will be avail
able at the convenience of all In
terested persons. It will be poss
ible to hear all of the recordings
or speclfio numbers upon request
in an open house manner.

of a faster-than-sound bomber may
be flying within the next year.
High priority is known to have
been given tlx project by the Air
Force which has watched with
evident concern Soviet progress In
both bomber and fighter-intercep
tor designs.
This Interest sharpened with the
display two weeks ago of a new
heavy Ruaslan bomber driven by
jet engines of substantially greater
power than any now In operational
use by the U.S. Air Force, .
The Air Force announced In
December 185J that It had asked
Consolidated Vultee Alrcralt Corp.,
builder of the B3o plston-Jet-cn-gined
heavy bomber, to prepare
detailed design studies for a "su
personic bomber."
Since then, it was learned today,
substantial progress has been
made toward production of a pro
totype Bit Jet bomber,
The Increasing speed of new
fighter models, both Russian and
American, is a factor in the urgent
push for development of a super
sonlo bomber. The United Slates,
and quite probably Russia, already
has bombers In production that fly
at the speed of sound 1761 miles
an hour at sea level, decreasing
as altitude Increases up to a cer
tain point.)
If Interceptors ara up to sonic
or supersonic speed, then bombers
must be as fast or faster if they
are to be expected to reach their
targets.
In addition to the matter of
bomber - vs. fighter capabilities.
there Is involved the American pol
Icy of deterrent power. If the
United States continues to keep
ahead of Russia in bomber quality
and maintains supremacy in atom
ic weapons, Russia will continue
to be discouraged from atarUns
war. But If Russia takes the lead
witn taster and better bombers,
which can elude U.S. interception,
the deterrent factor Is diminished
or eliminated.

Meteor Reported

SAN JOSE. Calif. I That
green ball of fire which flashed
across Northern California skies
Saturday night was a meteor, says
an astronomer at Lick Observatory
on an. namuion.
Dr. Olm Eggen said the meteor
was of a type known technically
as a bolide. He was one of the
hundreds of persona who witnessed
Its fiery path.
Dr. Eggen said it struck the
ground in the Isabel Valley, east
of Mt, Hamilton, and burst Into
pieces probably up to 10 Inches
in diameter,. -
