Decides On
New Policy
By BOB THOMAS
HOLLYWOOD I It's hsrd to
imagine Shelley Winters as a
- ahrlnklnt violet, but the doll claims

matters in public.
"I've tot a new policy." she
tays. "From now on, my personal
life is my own. I also have a new
policy concerning; my career. I'm
through with playing blonde
floosies."
: A reporter grows accustomed to
hearing remarkable remarks from
Shelley, but this time she seems
- earnest. Hiving just gone through
a highly publicised breakup of her
marriage to Vittorlo Qassman, she
says she's had her share of head
lines and wants no more.
"I'm serious," aho Insisted. "I've
hid it. I see no reason why a
star has to live her personal life
in the public prints."
I mentioned that it was hard

"Marlon Brando does It," she
said. Oraee Kelly, and Audrey
Hepburn. They've been able to
keep their private Uvea private.
Whv rant I?"
. I further reasoned that people
Just couldn't get used to Shelley
as the quiet type. Her past was
ajralnst her.
- She admitted that she has never
-been adverse to publicity, but
claimed that she never sought the
personal kind. What about the big
blowup with Oassman in Italy?
"We were egged into it by the
press," she claimed. "I never said
lot of things I wss supposed
to have said. I never said there
Was too much ham in his Hamlet."
Ah, but what about her remark
that Vittorlo would have to guar
antee that he would marry his
stage co-star, Anna Maria Femro,
'before she would agree to a div
orce? She blanched, then said: "I don't
want to talk about it. All I can
say is that both Vittorlo and I
did some foolish things. We never
ahould have married. We were
both so romantic that we got car
ried away.
"But when we faced the facts,
it wss - apparent our marriage
couldn't last. The idea of spend
ing six months in this country and
six mwthT in Italy sounded fine
at the outset. But we never could
have worked it out. He waa all
wrapped up in hia career, and I
wasn't -about to give up mine. I've
worked too hard for it.
