CLAYTON NANNON, Sport Editor
JARRIN' JIMMY IYRNE will be in the featured bout of the
evening when he meets Big Bill Mathis in Friday night's box
ing card. Byrne was slated to face Andy Walker, but Walker
it sidelined with an injured hand, that was hurt in recent
workouts in San Francisco. '
Promoter Mack LUlard received
n shot in the arm from Mother
Nature last night, when he found
Big Bill Mathis ready and willing
to take Andy Walker's place in
this Friday night's main event of
the Armory boxing card.
Walker's manager telegraphed
LUlard that the giant Negro had
sustained a badly injured hand In
Monday's workouts, and doctors
pd vised him cot to use it because
there was a possible fracture in
volved. '
It just so happened that Mathis,
who has fought Byrne before, vcas
the one that Walker injured his
hand against. Mathis, who scales
somewhere around the 230 mark,
jvas sparring with Walker when
the accident happened.
Byrne holds a knockout win over
the big Californlan in a Portland
light just' recently, but Mathis
says that It was a lucky punch
that landed after the San Fran
cisco Negro had built up -a lead
on points over Byrne.
Byrne also stated that It could
have been a lucky punch but in
sists that he can do It again, so
it boils down to a "I told you so"
fight for the main event ten round
er this Friday night.
Besides landing a fighter' like
Mathis, Lillard pulled four aces
cut of the hat when he tentatively
signed Al Moore, the ring clown
who made such a hit with local
boxing fans a while back, with1
The Beatty Bomber, Ralph Wels
er. Weiser and Moore fought it out
to a draw in their last meeting,
in the semi-windup Jto the Byrne
Roger Smith bout late in March.
Armory fans will remember
Moore from his unorthodox style
of fighting, and Weiser will re
member the McChord Air Force
fighter because of the confusing
style that Moore fought.
The Weiser-Moore battle is slated
to go six rounds, and will be the
semi-windup to the ten round head
liner of Byrne-Mathis.
In two special six rounders,
Rudy Carlson will meet Bobby
Barney and Darrell Harrington
will trade blows with Eddie Brown.
The Carlson-Barney bout will be
a test for the Sprague River knock
out artist. The Indian fighter has
posted two quick knockouts in
his last two fights in the Armory,
and has shown plenty of class in
both his appearances. '
Brown and Harrington have met
before, with the fight ending in
a draw, after Brown had Harring
ton on the ropes, and very near
hcving the local boxer out when
the bell sounded.
To round out what probably will
be the best fight card in the Ar
mory ring this year is a four
rounder with Billy Sunday meeting
Buddy Clearwater of San Fran
cisco. Lillard was looking for a good
four round fighter to face Sunday,
and when he was talking to Math
is,. learned of Clearwater's ability
as a middleweight fighter.
Tickets are still on sale at
Dick Reeder's Store for men. and
will continue until Friday. Accord
ing to reports, the ticket sale has
been moving fairly fast, and fans
are urged to get their reserved
seats while they are still available.
