James Roosevelt can amend no
separate maintenance suit to one
for divorce was the key question
in a Superior Court hearing today.
Also up for decision was his mo
tion to strike from the record his
sensational infidelities letter dated
Feb. 27. 1945, in which he names
nine women with whom accord
ing to the letter he was inti
mate.
Last Jan. 18 Roosevelt, who Is
running for Congress, filed suit for
separate maintenance, charging
extreme cruelty. Nine days later
his estranged wife Romelle filed a
separate maintenance suit, alleg
ing cruelty and adultery. She
named three co-respondents.
Roosevelt has denied any mis
conduct and said he was black
mailed into signing the 1945 letter
to prevent a divorce.
On April 19 the eldest son of the
late President Roosevelt offered
bis wife a divorce and half his
property and net Income. Mrs.
Roosevelt, who is receiving $1,625
a month temporary support under
court order, denounced the offer
as a "publicity stunt."
Her counsel is opposing the di
vorce move and the motion to
strike the 1945 letter. She contends
that the Infidelities letter and an
other one written the same day
are linked and form a binding con
tract. In the other letter Roosevelt
offered his wife in effect half bis
property and earnings lor the rest
