Benson Warns
Spud Growers
.' Potato growers have again been
cautioned by Secretary of Agricul
ture Benson to adjust their 1954
oroduction plana realistically if
they are to avoid marketing trou
ble.
"A year ago at this time," he
said,- "the lntentlons-to-plant re
port Indicated that growers were
proposing to plant too many po
tatoes In 1063. On March 37 we
issued a strong appeal to potato
growers to take another look at
their Intentions' and make the
necessary adjustments. We pointed
out .that production greatly in ex
cess of needs would be certain to
result in lower farm returns. I
am repeating that warning now,
and also calling attention to the
lact that substantial compliance
with the announced acreage guides
will be a condition of eligibility for
any diversion assistance on the
1954 crop."
Mr. Benson warned that Potato
growers should not be misled into
easing up on their adjustment
plans because of the promotion
program and diversion action an
nounced on March 24.

Volunteers Ask
For Tough Duty
PARIS, W A French news
agency dispatch from Hanoi
quoted a French officer Friday as
saying "in certain units, nearly
50 per cent of the effectives have
volunteered to be parachuted into
Dien Bien Fhu!"
The volunteers include non-commissioned
officers and French and
African soldiers now fighting In
the Red River Delta. None of
them have been trained as para,
troopers,
The officer sald' they volunteered
following a request for reinforce
ments for the besieged garrison,
and those selected will be given
a nurry-up paratroop training.
Altar Society Meeting Held

Society of the Sacred Heart Church
held their monthly meeting last
night and appointed a nominating
committee of three members,
Frances Archer, Jeanette Shapiro
and Kitty McHugh, to select offi
cers for the ensuing year. A
net figure has not been arrived at
annual Irish Fair sponsored by the
society, however, plans were Com
pleted for a chicken dinner, with
the losing side In the ticket selling
campaign acting as hostesses to
the winners. This year Misses Ca
milla and Maria Acosta were tick
et captains, with Maria Acosta's
team coming out on top. The din
ner will be held at Mary Arena's
April 21.
