Senator Not
To Run In '54
I WASHINGTON Wh-Sen. Edwin
C. Johnson (D-Colo) said today he
is "not taking seriously yet" a
. move to draft him Into the race for
the Democratic nomination for gov
ernor in Colorado. .
Johnson recently announced he
would not be a candidate for re
election. His decision was general
ly regarded as a blow to Demo
cratic hopes of winning senate con
trol in the November elections. .
' The veteran Colorado senator
'said in an interview that some of
his .friends are "getting excited"
about drafting him for the state
race but he added that "they'll
cool off later."
Johnson apparently means to
stick to his decision not to seek
the Senate seat but there was In
his statement at least an indica
tion he will think about remaining
In politics at the state level.
If they can get a proved vote
getter like Johnson on their ticket,
national Democratic -leaders will
feel better about the Colorado sen
ate race, and about their over-all
chances of picking up the net of
one seat they would need "to gain
undisputed control .of the Senate.
That possibility brightened In the
view of many Democrats when
former Vice President Alben W.
Berkley announced he would go
after the Democratic ' senatorial
nomination in Kentucky.
In other Senate races, Democrats
apparently believe their chances
have Improved to re-elect ' Sen.
Douglas (D-Iin. And In Ohio the
minority party thinks it has about
the best available candidate in
Democratic Sen. Burke to buck
what is normally an off-year trend
to the Republicans.
Senators Gillette (D-Iowa), Mur
ray (D-Mont) and Hunt D-Wyo)
are viewed as strong candidates
for re-election and Democratic
leaders say they aren't worrying
much about returning Sen. Hum
phrey of Minnesota.

Executive Committee who are now
in Washington.

While in Washington at the hear
ing Crawford blasted the handling
ot affairs on the local reservation,
charged that there had been Irregu
larities in the handling of the bal
loting and stated that no one, in
cluding himself, knew at this time
what the Klamath tribe wanted..
He charged that some factions
on the reservation and the Indian
Bureau as a whole had used the
tribal council for "more than 30
yeara to block all legislation that
would In any way terminate fed
eral supervision over the Indians
and give them their freedom in
dividually or tribally."
Crawford said he favored Im
mediate liquidation of tribal assets
and releasing the Indians as Individuals.
Only comment to date on the
hearing has come from A. L, Tan
dy Jemison, editor and publisher
of The First American, a weekly
paper devoted to Indian affairs and
published In Herndon, Virginia. He
ssid: -
'We agree with- Mr. Crawford.
His testimony also makes clear the
reason for - a lot of the opposition
that has been so loud against this
program and which has been so
widely publicised in the public
press. Who ever heard of anyone
with his hands In the public till
that would "liquidate" his lob?

Members of tribal councils are no
different. They are in control and
they Intend to stay in control un
til the last penny is gone, too.
What becomes of the arguments
about having to pay taxes? The
estimated total land and personal
property taxes on Klamath proper
ty is 1273,550 per year. What is It
costing them now to operate at a
tribe? Approximately S400.000 per
year and If that Isn't taxes, what
is It? Listen Klamaths, that's a
straw bogy man they're trying to
scare you with. It's cheaper for
you to be cltlsensl"

Reds Seize
Two Americans

Two American soldiers petroling
the East - West German border
were seized by. armed Russian
soldiers Monday and have not
been returned, . U.S. Army head
quarters reported Tuesday. -
Two Bavarian border police who
went to the scene to Investigate
were also seised. Toe Army said
the two policemen were released
after four hours of Interrogation.

cans were withheld,
The. Army announcement said

apprehension reported- that the

Soviet soldiers and . one . officer
some 300 yards inside the West
ern Zone."
"A U.S. jeep was captured with
the personal weapons and equip
ment of its . two occupants," It
said. '.'The two released Bavarians
reported seeing the Jeep while
they were In' Soviet custody.
"No shots ware fired and no one
was injured."
The announcement said the U.S.
military mission at Potsdam, in
the Soviet occupied Xaet Zone, has
requested . Soviet headquarters
there for Immediate release ot the
men ana equipment.

Reprimanded
PARIS W The North Atlantlo
Council handed a severe and un
precedented reprimand to France's
Marshal Alphonse Juin Tuesday
for his criticism of the proposed
European Defense Community.
The action by the permanent
delegates of the 14 NATO powers
heightened the virtual certainty
here that either France would have
to ask that Juin be relieved as
commander hi chief of Allied
forces in central Europe or the
marshal would have to resign.
"Any military officer receiving
this might be impelled to resign,"
a NATO spokesman commented.
Juin reiterated an earlier state
ment Monday he would quit the
post only if assured it would go
to anotner Frenchman, something
most observers think Is a cer
tainty. '
The council voted the reprimand
Monday and It was delivered to
Juin Tuesday morning. It said .
