aid Newest Probe Target
ji. By JACK BELL
i WASHINGTON I Agents of
ten. McCarthy (R-Wis) have beea
pUeUy checking the Department
it Agriculture and Secretary Ben
eon's agency soon may be brought
aider the Wisconsin senator's fire.
; McCarthy, now on a Midwest-
be wants to make a farm speech
fc the Senate.
' It may be the kickoff In a cam
paign against some of the aspects
pt the flexible farm price support
program put before Congress by
jSenson with President Eisenhow
er's support.
'I Investigation by the staff of Mc
Carthy's subcommittee of alleged
Communists who may be In the
department could blossom at al
most any time into hearings like
-those conducted into some of the
Army's affairs.
?j Benson's action in announcing a
'ut in dairy price supports from
the present level of 90 per cent
".'to 75 per cent on April l has an-
geied McCarthy and many of his
- dairy farm constituents in Wis
i consul.
i r McCarthy's attitude toward Ben
on as expressed to the Wiscon-
Hj,in senator's friends is that the
'icablnet member is a fine, upstand
j, Ing gentleman whose ideas and
speeches are likely to cost the Re
a' publicans Senate and House seats
, In the Middle West.
5 The net loss by Republicans of
i ne Senate seat would bring Dem-
,-i'cratic control of that body and
( cost McCarthy his chairmanship
,fOf the Senate's permanent tmiestl
,4 gating committee. The Wisconsin
senator has plans to campaign ex
t tensively for Republican candi-
, . dates running in the November
.election.
i t In the farm speech he hopes to
( make soon in the Senate, McCar
thy is expected to call for a flex
ible system of price supports rang
ing from 85 to 110 per cent of
parity. Parity is a standard said
by law to give farmers a fair
return for their products in rela
tion to the things they buy.
Major field crops are supported
under the present law at 90 per
cent of parity, but Benson, had
proposed a sliding scale ranging
from 15 to 90-per cent.
McCarthy claims to have won
from Benson at private confer
ences of the senators on the farm
program a concession that there is
little likelihood that any of these
suppors would go down lower
than about 83 or 84 per cent. ,
The Wisconsin senator proposed
that Instead of asking Republican
candidates to go back to the voters
with a 75-tc-80 per cent program
more attractive by supporting an
85-to-110 per cent program.
Benson told a Denver, Colo.,
audience yesterday that those who
advocate high rigid supports J'are
inevitably leading" farmers to
ward a complete breakdown of the
support program. He said the pres
ent 90 per cent program Is "head
ing toward collapse" in the ac
cumulation of large government
held surpluses.
