start around Decoration Day and continue during the good weather. Training races will be
held by individuals for four of five weeks prior to that date, the birds being taken out for 10
mile flights then gradually built up to distances of 75 miles. Races will be held from Eugene to
Klamath Falls as well as from Salem, Portend and Seattle. Interested persons are urged to con
tact club members through Manning at Spring Lake or Matt at 440S Summers Lane.
Racing Pigeons Take To Air Again In
Klamath As Old Club Reactivated
By FRANK BRAMAN
The Crater Lake Racing Pigeon
uiuo, out or existence since 1M2
nas oeen reactivated and more
than 15 enthusiastic members are
getting set for their first post-war
season of race meets under the
leadership of President Howard
Manning, Spring Lake.
Following earlv discussions the
club has decided to race scientific
cally, in other words time against
distance. In doing this each mem
ber must acquire a pigeon timer,
which is a metal box containing
two watch works and with openings
in the two compartments fitted with
doors which In turn are connected
by thin wires to Uie balance wheels
of the timers.
The first step In seltlnir up
race is for each pigeon loft to be
accurately located on good map
The map Is then sent to a spe
cialist who makes a survey to
determine the pigeon distances in
miles between each loft and the race
stations to be- used. Air miles, or
as the crow flys. These lofts can be
made up in a variety of ways, any
thing from a large packing crate
nailed to a building on up to the
Intricate and fancy lofts designed
especially for pigeon racing. The
lolls are constructed with traps
which allow the pigeons to enter,
out do not allow their leaving un
til released by the owner.
Racing pigeons are trained just
as rigmiy as race horses or mar.
athon runners. Proper food, plenty
oi exercise ana a careiully bal
anccd program. In proper condi
tion the birds will fly for long
distances, oitcn as much as a
thousand miles In an official race.
Even young birds have been known
to fly 600 miles In H hours. How
ever it must be remembered that
pigeons are a migratory bird and
do not perform any achievements
of flight not encountered by duoks,
geese and others.
The local club will race, for the
first year at least, 100, 200 and
300 miles for old birds, and may
keep the same schedule (or young
birds. They will be raced In a
north and south direction.
While birds may be raced from
any direction to their homes, it
was decided to follow the advice
of Cecil Matt, club member and
ex-prcsldent who has raced birds
here for 25 years. Matt savs that
north and south flying is by
far the most satisfactory course.
Since this means that birds are
always Hying "uphill" It Is my
opinion that in due time the Klam
ath birds will gain national recog
nition for this phase of racing.
In staging a rare all members
take their birds to a center to be
entered In the race of the mo
ment. Birds are given to a mem
ber of the race committee who
rails off the information on the
bird's leg band. Its color and sex.
all of which Is recorded by the
secretary. The bird Is then banded
with a rubber leg band, the num
bers on that band also being re
corded by the secretary. The bird
is finally Inspected (or condition
and if It is deemed fit to fly is
placed In a racing basket for ship
ment. The basket is then sealed
and shipped to the express office
at uie race station.
While the birds are enroule Uie
race secretary sets each mem
ber's timers with the hands stopped
ai l o'clock and the doors open.
A seal is placed on the trap.
Upon arrival at the race station
the birds are taken over by
member of the express staff ex
perienced in racing pigeons. He
releases the birds in accordance
with instructions previously re
ceived and then notifies the local
race secretary of the time oi re
lease, the weather conditions and
the direction and velocity of the
wind. The secretary, on receiving
this information, calls each mem
ber with a bird entered and passes
along the information along with
an estimate as to the time of the
birds' arrival.
Prom then on it's up to (he mem
ber to find a comfortable soot.
out of sight of his wife who may
have dismal plans for having him
share in the housework, and keep
an eye open for his bird's arrival.
When the bird arrives the owner
rushes to the trap and retrieves
the bird, take off the rubber coun
termark which was placed on his
leg and thrusts this into the pre
viously set and sealed timer. He
then closes the door which auio-
matlcally starts the clock to run
ning. Ho then waits for the secoud
arrival and repeats the process.
After a reasonable length of time
the secretary declares the race
closed and call In all timers. These
are then "taken off" or stopped
and the committee goes to work
tabulating the information and
checking It and the removed rub
ber leg band against information
previously recorded on the race
sheet. When all timers have been
taken off the committee figures

back from the time the timer was
taken off thereby determining the
time the bird arrived. The total
time elapsed in flight Is then brok
en down to seconds and this figure
applied against the total distance
to come up with a final figure
which determines the number of
yards per minute the bird aver
aged on the whole flight. That fig
ure then becomes the bird's offi
cial recorded time. If the bird is
a winner he will receive a certifi
cate from the American Racing
Pigeon Union, a national organiza
tion with which the local club Is
affiliated.
In spite of the strenuous exer
tions of the birds over great dis
tances in the face of enemies like
hawks, and the added threat of
rats in the baskets, birds live to
race lor many years. There are
two birds owned by club members
that are upwards of 18 years of age
and I believe these birds could still
give a good account of themselves
over the shorter distances.
Most racing pigeons fly at un
average of around 1200 yards per
minute, but many have been
clocked at greater speeds. I
clocked one In 1038 at 1880 ypm.
and the winner of that race was
clocked at 1880. I recall havwi
seen one record that boasted of
over 2100 ypm, but most fanciers
prefer the slower speeds of 1200 to
1500 ypm as competition is much
keener. Many races arc won by a
tenth of a yard a minute or less.
As to why pigeons go home
there Is no answer. Science has
tried to discover the "homing In
stinct" but to date there Is no
logical explanation. We Just have
to leave It to the future. Even
birds that were chloroformed and
taken far from their homes were,
ipon being revived and rested, re
leased and all arrived at their
homes In record time.

Cow Gives Birth
To Five Calves
Word was received by the Ameri
can Brahman Breeders Association
that an Africander cow, a native
African breed of Zebu cattle, re
cently gave birth to five calves In
one day. This is believe to be the
first case of quintuplet birth in cat
tle. The "litter", four heifers and
a bull, as well as the mother, are
doing well, according to the report
received by the ABBA from South
Africa.
The cow belongs to L. C. J. Swart
a farmer in the Kroonstad district
of the Orange Free State.
Although only one of the calves
Is allowed to nurse the mother, It
is reported that she pets them all
and "does not stop bellowing until
she 'counts' all five at her side."
are: Manning, president, Frank
Braman, secretary treasurer; Ce
cil Matt, Eugene Linkenback and
Walter Bliss, executive committee,
and Marshall Powell. L. F. Grav
and Bud Luttrell, race committee.
Interested persons are urged to
visit the various lofts and race
events. Nor are women excluded.
There are many women currently
racing pigeons and doing very well
with them. The gals seem to have
a touch with the homers that
makes 'em fly Just a little bit fast
