Widowed Mother

mother . who drew the nation's
sympathy when the fourth ol her
five soldier-sons died in service
was lulled last night in a highway
accident near her home.
State police said Mrs. Florida
A. Jones, 63, of nearby Bickmore,
a widow, was struck by an auto
mobile about 10 p.m. as she
walked along State Route 16. She
was dead when the ambulance
reached Laird Memorial Hospital
in Montgomery.
Only one of her five sons sur
vives. He is Air Force Sgt. Wil
liam L, Jones, who reportedly now
is on recruiting duty in the
Charleston area.
Three of her sons were killed
during World War II.
Her youngest boy, Eugene, 25,
crashed to his death In paratroop
training at Ft. Bennlng, Oa., in
1950.
Two days later, the nation ack
nowledged its gratitude in a letter
from Louis A. Johnson, then sec
retary of defense, offering the dis
charge of her fifth son from the
Air Force.
Her simple refusal was:
"I am glad that I still have one
con in the service of my country,"

ture, and Martin and Lewis- will
probably get in the act too. Who
knows?
"I've always wanted to' do; a
picture with Judy Garland. We've
done a lot of radio programs and
Army shows together, and I think
she s the greatest female talent in
town. As a matter of fact, I think
she's the greatest talent, male or
lemaie."
Blng said he still keeps up his
recording schedule. On his lunch
Hour, he slips over to Decca and
knocks oft a side, or two. The disc
company is only a half block from
paramount, and it's very likely
