Tnc American Foundation lor Animal Health said the next two months will niarkvthe penk- period ior outbreaks of winter dysentery, especially in stabled cattle.. The problem is particularly serious in dairy herds during early spring, officials said.: r Today's report says that a typi cal outbreak may at first involve only one or two cows with mild scours, which appear unimportant. But 24 hours later a majority of the cattlo may be affected and milk flow may be cut in half. Because the disease may be con fused with another cattle problem, coccidiosis, an immediate diagnos is was advised. "Winter dysentery Is seldom fa tal but takes a toll through re duced 'milk production and dehy dration of affected cattle," the Foundation says. "With proper treatment, the course of the dis ease may be limited to three days or a week, but dysentery outbreaks often run two weeks or more if left untreated." Veterinarians have reported good success in combatting the condition if treatment is started early. The Foundation also recommend ed several routine preventive and control measures, including the barring of visitors from feed alleys, reducing the feed Intake when the disease strikes, and avoiding sud den changes in rations. QV Seed Potato Certification Hearing Set For Sacramento A heaNne of vital Interest to po tato seed growers In the Tulelalce area has been set for Tuesday, March 18, at 9 a.m. in the confer ence room ot the State Department of Agriculture, state office build ing No. 1, Sacramento. - Beef Feeders Optimistic CHICAGO Favorable price mar gins are offsetting the high costs of weight gains for many cattle feed ers as the supplies of well-fed cattle-move to market more promptly than usual, reports H. M. Con way, director of research for the National ; Live Stock Producer magazine. These favorable prices are tend ing to crease renewed optimism among feeders, which is being re flected by a more active demand for stocker and feeder cattle, con tinued Conway. In fact, there is soma concern as to whether or not there is an adequate supply of stockers and feeders to meet feed' lot replacement demands, and to fill summer pastures In the mid. western grazing areas. The present outlook indicates there may op a decline in be-'.i supplies in late winter and early summer since the top grades arc being marketed early and supplies of. lower grades, which ordinarily in early summer, were reduced due to high feeding costs. , Another factor reducing the sup. ply of beef available during the coming months is tlie large num ber of calves and yearlings which were placed on feed last fall that are being finished for late summer and early winter marketing. sey Cattle Club.
