The agricultural Industries ol ihe
Klamath Basin are many. The
main cash crop is potatoes. The
value of potato crops varies from
six million to 12 million dollars
per year. The second major crop
in rotation with potatoes Is Hann-
Chen barley.
Among seed crops, Alsine cioicr
Is of major importance. Klamath
Rnsin nroduces IS to 18 per cent
of the nations Alsike clover and
it Is sent to all parts of the United
Slates.
Grass seeds produced are Bent
grass, bluegrass, crested wheat and
many other miscellaneous crops.
Alfalfa is also an outstanding
crop. Twenty thousand acres are
produced annually.
Lumberics iz one of our chief
fodustries and we had a- chance
lo visit the Weyerhaeuser Timber
Co. Here are our findings:
Loss that are lumbered at Weyer
haeuser come by logging trucks
from the many outlying regions of
Klamath Basins tree farms. Tne
logs are brought up from the mill
pond by . the bull chain and the
bark is removed by a device called
the "barker" which removes the
bark by a great force of water
beating upon the log. Prom there
the log is brought up to the bull
saw which is 104 inches in diame
ter, and cut to standard length
which is 16 feet. Then the head
rigs, of which there are four at
Weyerheauser. take over. Each
headrig has an edger and trimmer
