You'll find It on the second floor
of an old building at Universal
International. The monster mus
ters who run the joint are make
up chief Bud Westmore and his as
sistant. Jack Gavin. These fellows
can whip up a monster at the
drop ol a script, and that's what
they've been ooing lately.
I dropped In at the freak works
and found Gavin putting the fin
isli.ng touches on the latest cre
ation, an ant man.
"This fellow ls called a mutant,"
Gavin explained clinically. "Ho
comes from the planet of Melal
iima, where the Metalumans breed
them for work purposes. They are
half-man mid half-ant. an interest
ing combination."
interesting enough to scare you
out of your wits if you met one in
a dark alley. The mutant ls a blue
green horror with vivid red veins
laihod around its body. It has a
twu-foot-high head that appears to
be an exposed, oversize brain. The
arms, with viselike pincers, dangle
down to his 'ankles and he has
a shell-like back. He's a doll, all
right.
This fellow makes bis debut in
"This Island Earth," and his keep
ers, the Metalumans, are also
wierd. They're more human-lik
but they have high domes topped
by while hair.
An assignment o: tins son is
routine lor Westmore and Gavin.
"We're the only studio equipped
to handle) big jobs like this," West
more remarked. "We have our own
bit; bake oven for setting the molds
and everything."
Monsters don t come cheap. The
mutant came to a .bill of $6,500,
which is not bad as monsters go.

mutant will restore his reputation
as a monstrosity maker.
Universale penchant for horror

ments was 'Abbott and Costello
Met Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde,' "
Westmore recalled. "We had to
make up nine Dr. Jeckyl masks.
The Idea Was that as one actor
bit another, he turned into a Dr.
Jeckyl. Then at the end we had
to turn Lou Costello Into a mouse!"
But the most expensive job was
for no monster at all. It was mak
ing Attrf Blyth's tail in "Mr. Pea
body and the Mermaid." Bud and
hlj staff ipent ' three months on
haf job, making tall after tail un
til the studio bosses decided on one
they liked. The cost: 22,000.

Carthy (R-Wls) broadened his at
tack' today' on the Army's handling
of alleged Communists In its ranks
showdown with Secretary of the
Army Robert T. Stevens.
Stevens was to have " appeared
this morning before McCarthy's
Senate Investigations subcommit
tee to reply to the Wisconsin's
senator's charges that the Army
was trying to ""'coddle and pro
mote Communists." -
But McCarthy late yesterday or
dered the hearing postponed until
Thursday, partly to accommodate
Sen. Dirksen (R-ni), who had a
conflicting engagement, but also,
McCarthy said, to give Stevens a
chance to prepare fully for his
testimony.
Instead, McCarthy called a so
far unidentified witness lo a public
hearing (10:48 a.m., EST) which
he predicted would snow - now mc

and morale by "unfair attacks.'
As a result, Stevens has ordered
Zwicker and Maj. Gen. William
Bergtn, the Army adjutant general,
not to testify in response to Mc
roriw. summons. Stevens said he
would appear himself. Network
