the three smaller parties would

If they do, his government would
have a 16-vote majority In the 590
seat Chamber of Deputies.
But his choice was certain to
provoke a storm from the Com
munists and Fascists, who hate
him. As De Gasperi's Interior min
ister, he formed and trained the

countless times have subdued both
left and right-wing riots with swing

Four Killed
Over Weekend
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Four persons met violent deaths
in Oregon over the weekend.
Two were killed In traffic acci
dents, one died In a fire, and one
was run over by a train.
Dominic IFevie, 50, was dead
on arrival at a hospital after flames
swept .through his second floor
Portland apartment early Sunday.
Attendants said he suffocated from
smoke.
Weldon Satterberg, 17, was killed
outright when thrown from a cSr
that plunged off a road southwest
of Portland Saturday night. Two
other Portland area youths who
were In the car were not hurt.
Calvin Marshall, 25, Roseburg,
was Injured fatally Saturday when
his motorcycle crashed into a car
as it was turning off a highway
three miles south of Roseburg. The
driver of the automobile was cited
for failure to make proper signals.
Roscoe E. Broyles, 39, Echo, who
was married only three days be
fore, was killed Sunday when run
over by a Union Pacific freight
train near Stanlleld.
Coroner J. A. Folsom said the
train crew reported Broyles threw
himself down on the tracks In
front of the onrushlng train.
Bly Cub Scouts
Hold Meeting
BLY Bly Cub Pack 19 held its
monthly meeting January 28 in the
high school science room.
The meeting was called to order
by Cub Master Emil Johnson. Com
munity singing was led by Jim
Chance, accompanied on the piano
by Louise Branham.
Following the business meeting,
the three dens gave their skits.
Den I sang and danced the Pa
jama song as puppets; strings
were pulled by their den mother,
Gerry Chase. Den n dressed as
hillbillies and used homemade In
struments for an effective band.
They were assisted by their den
chief, Paul Melsness. and den
mother, Louise Branham. Den III
gave a short play on covered wa
gon days, assisted by their den
chief, Carson Chase, and den moth
er, Carrie Johnson.
After the skits the following boys
earned awards: Olen Hill Jr., wolf
rank badge, wolf rank gold arrow,
wolf rank silver arrow; Roy Tuck
er, wolf rank gold arrow; Donald
Johnson, wolf rank silver arrow;
Donald Biles, bear rank badge,

To Expose
Hate Groups
WASHINGTON 11 The House
Un-American Activities Committee
says It will seek to expose "var
ious and sundry 'hate groups as
well as Communists. .
The committee said In Its an
nual report to Congress such or
ganizations often use "ultrapat-
rlotic names and devices" but
spread "dissension, discord, big
otry and intolerance." Targets are
"individuals or groups of religious
and racial minorities," the com
mittee added.
The report, made public Satur
day, said evidence Indicated the
presence of a few Communists or
sympathizers among clergymen
and educators, but it attested to
the loyalty of the great majority
of Americans In those fields.
And, while the committee said it
has not conducted and does not
intend to conduct an "investiga
tion of subversive infiltration of
the clergy" and has never probed
the subjects taught or teaching
methods of schools, it added that
no Individual enjoys "Immunity
from Investigation, regardless of
his rank or calling."
Statements last year by Rep.
Velde (R-Ill), committee chair
man, which were taken to mean
he might probe for Communists
among the clergy, stirred up con
siderable criticism. Velde said he
meant only that individual clergy
men might be investigated if the
committee received information
linking them to subversion.
The report said "a minute num
ber of c a s e-hardened Commu
nists" and sympathizers had in
filtrated the clergy and some
clergymen had been careless in
allowing their names to be used
by suspect groups. But It added
that such cases represented only
"a minute percentage of the hun
dreds of thousands of loyal, patrio
tic men of uie ciotn."

Former Resident
Dies At Pendleton '
Word was received here today of
the death Sunday, February 7, of
Herbert England, 62, former resi
dent of Klamath Falls. Since leav
ing here, he has resided at Pendle
ton. Mr. England came to Klamath
Falls in 1921 and was employed at
the Algoma Box factory for many
years.
He had been HI some time.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs.
Caroline England and one son,
Ronald, both of Pendleton.
Funeral services will be held
Wednesday, February 10, at 2:30
p.m. In Pendleton.
