A 27-year-old Negro accused of
forgery claimed that he was Intimi
dated and "punched in the ribs"
by arresting officers when his trial
opened Thursday in Circuit Court.
Judge David R. Vandenberg dis
missed veniremen summoned for
the case for 24 hours and said he
was "going into the matter thoroughly."
The defendant, Ulysses Ford, re
ported to be a federal parole vio
lator, described questioning by
state police officers and the dis
trict attorney. He said he was in
duced to sign his name and the
name of "Bob Mest," but was not
told beforehand that the writing
would be used as evidence against
him.
Under questioning by Defense At
torney Donald A. W. Piper, Ford
also stated that he was not ap
prised of his constitutional rights.
He added that he was also told
that if he didn't admit trying to
cash a bogus check and waive
grand Jury investigation he would
be prosecuted the "bard way."
After Ford completed his testi
mony shortly before noon, Judge
Vandenberg recessed the hearing
until 2 p.m. Thursday.
Ford was arrested last Novem
ber after he was alleged to have
attempted to cash a check for $110
on which the name of Bob Mest,
Klamath Falls automobile dealer,
was forged. According to arresting
officers. Ford was employed for a
short time by Mest.
