Methodists Release. Year-End
Membership, Value Figures
CHICAGO Membership of The
Methodist Church In the United
States and its possessions now
stands at 9,151,524, according to
official 1953 figures released
by the Rev. Albert C. Hoover,
cnurch statistician.
This represents a slight drop
of 28,904 when compared to the
total membership figure of 9,180,428
reported a year ago. Last year's
figure, however, included 1,024,
466 inactive members.
In issuing his report, the Rev.
Hoover pointed out that by action
of the denomination's 1952 Gener
al Conference, pastors no longer
list inactive members in a sep
arate column in the statistics. This
change has resulted in consider
able pruning of church rolls. Wide
spread and successful evangelistic
campaigns have compenstated for
most of the losses occasioned by
the pruning process and the new
method of reporting.
The ligure of 9.151,524 members
Includes 25,907 ministers, but it
does not include 968,981 prepara
tory members (baptized children
and others not yet received into
full membership).

Claus (Lewis Jones) appeared in
the basement to give gifts to all
the children and refreshments
were served by women of the
church.
Christmas Eve a vesper worship
service with a Christmas cantata
was given at 7 p.m. at the church.
A candlelighting ceremony by
George Swanson and Sandra Hope
followed the organ prelude by
Mrs. Gerald Wollf. "Silent Night,"
a cappella by the choir; a pro
cessional, "Come, All Ye Faithful,"
and a call to worship and invoca
tion by the minister, the Rev. Ed
mund Stanton, followed. Readings
from the Old Testament prophets
concerning the birth of the -Christ
child and the anthem, "For Unto
us a jnim is Born," were read
The remainder of the program
had New Testament readings by
Mrs. gaouard mauix. Lester Ho
