It Happened This Way in New Pine Creek By IRVIN FAHIS Hoo-ray! hoo-ray! So here we go! Quaking with both joy and lear, at the end of this climactic year, 1953. The old year dips and quivers before the New bounding in the jolly vortex at this Yuletide; mak ing its last bid for a triumphant .ride into history. The aim though grandiloquent we must all agree is yet perplexing in immensity. Each person seems to glory at striving so intensely busy straining his capacity al most mercilessly and despoiling his gains often too pretentiously. Oh Lord we muse what for? Is it just to spread glad tidings and nothing more? Or is it a modern lust for things and things, spurred on by processes our system brings which make us feel that unless we spend and spend we're nothing but a heel? How simple the Yuletide was at first to be! How surprising it has boomed so monstrously; to that point, when we exceed our means and make, Santa's bag just al most break. A modest gift sincerely given, is truly a boon to just plain livin". Our little village is swept into the vortex of this Yuletide and we fnoc the fact with pride, that, quite aside from the usual stride, we can speed up the pace and grin. Every thing rebounds at once, the cry comes from all around but glorious ly we re-affirm our strength and keep both feet on the ground. The crescendo of the Christmas tide we felt this week and next week it may be worse provided Old Santa has not cleaned out the contents of his purse. But Wowle! just think bur little P.O. sold S35 worth of postage yesterday, a rec ord day in the sixteen years we've known it. That's a lot o' lickin' for this village. I got in on just enough of it to make my tongue feel like a paper-hanger's fingers. We've had several lickin' devices around at various times in the past but somehow when you need 'em no can find. The social whirlwind really be gan here last Saturday night with the big WPC's fire department dance that probably will net around $250 when everything is added and substracted. It was gayly succes ful with the Grange hall not packed especially, but just comfortably crowded. And what a swell supper they served. It s actually a thrill to take part in and nave sucn a good time at an event like that when you know that you're helping everybody when you support the firemen s cause. They know what they need and have to have to provide ample protection for the town and believe me, Fire Chief Clarence McClain is sure grateful to every person who helped stage the event and contributed in any n matter whatsoever, toward its suc cess. The Happy Hour Club held its annual Christmas party and this is the one time of year that that club really goes all out for fun. They dress up in the craziest costumes known to man and stage some play befitting the group just mem bers and their families can attend these special events which makes them exclusive. The club ladies have been prac ticing In the Grange hall for several nights now polishing off their parts. They also decorated tiie tree and the hall last night which dec orations will remain up throughout the Yuletide season. They say the tree is really a dandy which wns fetched down from the mountains by Bill Allen, an old-timer at this arduous function, and John Richardson. Events coming up will be the big Grange Christmas party and pro grain to be held this Saturday night Dec. 19 and soon after Christmas, on Dec. 27th. the Needle Club will have their party with the exchange of gifts and supper. Duplicity on the state line: On Tuesday evening, Dec. 22 (this is what hurts) the two school Christmas program will be held on the same night, at Kelly Creek and State Line schools. Often there are friends and parents who like to visit the other school and take In both programs but this year some how they got planned on the same night. The time Is 8 o'clock. Par ents and friends are invited to both schools. Santa will be at the Antler's Hall from 7 until 8 on Monday night, Dec. 21, to hand out goodies to all pre-school and grade school chil dren. He will be sponsored by the VPW and the Ladies Auxiliary. Elizabeth Benefield, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Benefield, was joined In marriage here to George Jaska, of Lakeview, in the First Baptist Church at 9 last Sun day morning. Only the immediate members of the families of the young couple were present. jaska, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Jaska, operates a farm with his father, in the Thomas Creek Dis trict. Elmer returned home Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Will Vernon and Benny had Mr. and Mrs. John Bax ter and Riley Mc Bride as supper guests Saturday evening. Sunday they were guests at the Floyd Lightle home. Mr. and Mrs. James Snider at tended the recital at the Bradley home Sunday. Sunday dinner guest; at the Merle O'Neil home were Mr, and Mrs. Truman Hartzog, Mrs. Mc Hann, Mr, and Mrs. John O'Neil. Pat stayed with Mrs. Grace Turn er while his mother was away: and Linda and Mike with their grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Kelso attend ed the smorgasbord dinner held at the new parish hall in Lakeview Monday evening. Mrs. Baxter .was busy in the kit chen Monday evening preparing supper when several relatives ar rived with supper all prepared and a birthday cake made by Mrs. Wayne Hampton. The affair was a huge surprise to Mrs. Baxter, and had been secretly planned by the others for some time. Those who participated in the surprise supper were Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ayoutt and Gloria. New Pine Creek; Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Hampton and daughters. Vernon district; Mr. and Mrs. Paul Harp er, Lakeview; Earlene La Branch, West Side: Mr. and Mrs. John Bax ter and Riley McBride.
