ficers were red-faced. Someone had
pilfered one of the city's two pa
trol cars. It was found later stuck

Yamhill
Locks To
Shut Down
McMINNVILLE OB The Yam
hill River locks at Lafayette, long
ago used by river freighters, will
be closed by the Army Engineers
Feb. 4..
For a number of years logs were
rafted through the locks, but that
traffic gradually dwindled. Now the
engineers find the property surplus
and they have suggested that
Yamhill County join in finding
someone who would like to take
over. the locks and adjacent seven
acre park.
Col. John Graf, executive officer
for the Portland district, met
Wednesday with county officials
and others. He suggested that a
licensing agreement be prepared
which the government might accept
if no local group can be found to
buy or lease the locks and park.
Some revenue from irrigation
water was suggested as likely.
Graf said that if the area is not
taken oven by a local group, it
will be turned over to the General
Services Administration for dis
posal as surplus.
Reds Set On
Purge Of US
NEW YORK I.B A former Lith
uanian diplomat says he believes
the Russians already have lists
of people to be deported or purged
if the United States should ever be
occupied by the Communists.
Antanas Trimakas, the former
Baltic diplomat and now chairman
of the economics department at
oeton Hail university, Newark, N.
J., says the Soviets prepared such
lists for Lithuania before occupy
ing it in 1940.
Trimakas testified Friday before
a House committee investigating
the Soviet Union's annexation oi
the Baltic states. Hie hearings con
tinue here Saturday.
During one three-day period
after the 1940 occupation, Trlmikas
told the congressional group, 30,000
of the 150,000 residents of the Lith
uanian capital, Kaunas, were ex-i
ecuted or deported to slave labor,
camps.
"Well-to-do people, respectable
people, leaders or people that
owned certain property . . . were
(considered) enemies of the So
viet,:' he said.
Trimakas asserted that the purge
lists were compiled by Lithuanian
Communist Party members and by
the Soviet diplomatic service as
part of a master plan to change
iree man into the Soviet man."
Lost Boy Found
High Atop Cliff
PASADENA, Calif. W) Dickie
Lutzoff, 8, lost for 10 freezing
hours In the San Gabriel Moun
tains, was rescued yesterday from
a Mt. Wilson cliff by three mem
bers of the Altadena Montaineers
Rescue Club. They found him
perched on an old slide overlooking
a 1,000-foot precipice.
Dickie said he hadn't moved
from 4 p.m. Saturday when he be
came lost until he was found.
The lad had gone into the moun
tains with three other youngsters
but had decided to return alone
by a short cut, sheriff's officers
said.
War Nothing New
To This Recruit
TOKYO IB Bernard D. Kaplan,
26, New York City, who covered
the Korean War from start to fin
ish as a correspondent,, is being
drafted into the Army.
Kaplan came to the Par East for
International News Service but
since 1051 has represented the
London Daily Mall and the Cana
dian Broadcasting System.
His wife, Antonia Schilling, is
en route home by ship. Kaplan
leaves by plane tomorrow to re
port for Induction in New York
City.
The Klamath Sportsmen's Association and the Her
ald and News are cooperating in offering a "Sportsman
of the Year" and a "Landowner of the Year" award this
year, both categories to receive $25 for top place and
honorable mention for second. The Sportsmen prizes
will be awarded for the outstanding exampta of sports
manship displayed by a hunter during the current deer
and migratory bird season. The Herald and News award
Will go to the landowner voted as showing the greatest
cooperation and understanding toward the hunting pub

Gets Promised Paved Road
ATLANTA Wl Mrs. Herman Tal
madge, the wife of Georgia's gov
ernor, finally got her road paved.
Back In 1948, gubernatorial can
didate Herman Talmadge was
promising Georgians he would build
10,000 miles of highway if elected.
Charging past administrations with
road favoritism, Talmadge roared
from the campaign stump:
"I promise you this: that the last
road in Georgia to be paved will
be the one beside my farm home."
He was elected and eventually

Finally, Mrs. Talmadge decided
to skip state government and try
local sources. She mentioned the
matter to her representative, Ed
McGarity.
Yesterday, as she drove back to
the executive mansion from the
farm in a pouring rain, Mrs. Tal
madge beamed. She drove over a
paved road. The quarter-mile strip
had been paved with county forces
and county funds. Mrs. Talmadge
is a taxpayer In Henry County.
With a smirk she sent this mes
sage to the stalling State Highway
Board dominated by her husband:
It can be abolished for all I
care."

Wheat Urged
At Meeting
LA GRANDE IA1 Oregon wheat
growers were urged Friday to sell
wheat now in storage whenever the
market price ncars the price sup
port loan value.
Unless this and other measures
are taken Lester F. King told the
Slate Wheat League, it might be
necessary to leave 50 million bush
els of grain piled on the ground in
the Pacifio Northwest next sum
mer. King, league president, also
urged farmers to feed surplus bar
ley to livestock and to plant soil
conserving crops instead of barley
on ground that has been divertea
from wheat production under the
acreage allotment program.
Russell Lincoln of Oregon State
College reported that his studies
showed that rainfall was only 6 per
cent above normal In areas where
clouds had been seeded in efforts
to produce rainfall.
Despite this report, the league's
production and land use committee
recommended cloud seeding be
continued in the Gilliam, Sherman
and Morrow counties area for at
least one more year.
The league recommended devel
opment of tho Columbia River
along the lines of the Army Engi
neers' "308 report" which calls lor
construction of a multi-puronse
dam at Hells Canyon on the Snake
River.
It also recommended a sales tax
as "the only adequate solution to
Oregon's expanding fiscal needs.
Sheriffs Against
Salary Fixing
PORTLAND (IF) The Oregon
State Sheriff's Association, meeting
here Friday, rejected a resolution
calling for the Stale Legislature to
llx county employes salaries.
Other resolutions:
Approved a study of salaries in
an atlempt to Induce county courts
to increase wages paid to sheriu s
deputies.
Urged tbe next Legislature to
regulate auction sales.
Recommended that other coun
ties adopt the uniform now worn
by Multnomah County deputies.
