To Be Trimmed

strength of the Army next year
but there is no plan to pare down
immediately American ground

Secretary of Defense Wilson and
his manpower chief. Asst. Secre
tary John Hannah, sketched in
some details at a joint news con
ference yesterday.
Wilson set out to explain re
marks at an earlier news confer
ence which had been viewed In
some quarters, abroad as well as
at home, as foreshadowing a re
duction in U.S Army strength in
Eruope.
The secretary asserted that "we
have no immediate plans for
taking troops out of Europe." Then
he quoted from a transcript of his
earlier conference in support of
his contention that he was talking
about "long-run" plans when he
associated development of new
weapons with the possibility of
cutting ground forces overseas.
Official declaration of intention
to maintain U.S. troop strength
in Europe was immediately hailed
as "reassuring" by the French
deputy foreign minister, Maurice
scnumann, who called on secre
tary of State Dulles yesterday.
Schumann told newsmen after
ward that he was "definitely sat
isfied" the U.S. contribution to de
fense forces in Europe would not

pearance in color slides" We
have all asked ourselves this
some lime or other.
The difficulty Is quite com
mon and is generally known as
over exposure of the film. It
can easily be overcome by pay
ing strict attention to the pro
per exposure. Both the washed
out color and the pale slides
are results of the same cause,
over-exposure of the film. This
means the film receives too
much light from the scene be
ing photogrnphed.
Keep in mind and use the
two simple exposure controls
on your camera. These two
controls are the f. stop or light
diaphram and the shutter or
speed control. If these are
both set properly there will
be no lighting difficulty. The
film used in the camera needs
a constant amount of light
for correct exposure, so chang
ing light on the scene requires
change in camera settings.
The shutter speed can be set
fairly constant. You use 150
of a second or 1100 of a sec
ond with Kodachrome film for
your . color slides. Use the f.
stop to make the necessary
changes in exposure. For ex
ample, if the sun is extremely
bright the f. stop you should
use is f. 8 with 150 of a sec
ond shutter speed. On the oth
er hand, if the day it rather
cloudy or dark It is wise to
use a f.5.6 opening. Be consis
tent in the handling of your
camera pick a medium shut
ter speed and use the same
type of film most of the time.
