script, says one of the top kicks
In the business.
Martin Horrel!, who produced
the radio show "Grand Centra:
Station" for 16 years and
now does the same wilh "Camp
bell's TV Sound Stage," invites
scripts from amateurs and rcacis
every one, loosing for possibiij
ties.
Every unused script is returned
wilh a letter of criticism or
couragement. If he thinks the
writer can develop, he tells her
how. If not, he tells her olher
channels she might try. If ihe
script is completely hopeless, he
says so.
Every woman has at least one
eood love story in her liie, say-,
Horrell, and therefore she must
have at least one good TV script.
If she doesn't rely on personal ex
periences, she may have many
more than one story for television.

For those who would like to
write scripts for pro! it, he has this
advice:
1. The first requirement is the
ability to write plain English ana
a knowledge of spelling. Sign lan
guage won't do.
2. Learn what goes into a com
mercial story. The best way to do
this is: (A) get a good book on
short story technique. (Bi go to a
library and get an anthology 01
scripts. Study these until you are
familiar with what makes a plot.
3. Don't expect to sell your first
story. Put it away in a drawer
and write one more. Then take
out the first one. If it still look
good, send it in. If not, keep try
ing until you are satisfied.
4. It's easier for the producer
if you write your script in regular
dialogue form, using only the left
hand side of the page. This leaves
room for a director's notations on
the right. This format, however,
is not what sells a story. If it's
a good story, it can be written
any way you want to do it. The
studio staff will take care of put
ting it in the proper form.
The most Important thing, Hor
rell says, is to keep the reader,
looker or listener emotionally in
volved in the characters, and won
dering what will happen to them
next.
Establish your charter, put
him in a situation, then extricate
him. That's the whole Uick. But
be sure your character and your
situation are interesting enough to
keep the audience absorbed and 1
eager to find out what happens j

of the new medium before his
scheduled appearance on Jimmy
Durantc's TV show last msht.
"I accepted the role because I
think Durante is the most lovable
figure in the entertainment world
today and It's a pleasure to be
associated with him.' he e
plained. Also, he admitted lh' Tv ls, "
good medium for selling theater
movies.
"It's bound to be a good adver
tising medium-look how fasl the
advertising agencies latched onto
it." he reasoned. "There's no rea
son you can't sell pictures with it,
as well as any other kind of prod
uct. "No, I wouldn't even mind do
ing a weekly show, if I could imd
something that would be good. I
see no reason why it would hurt
me at the box ofiice; It ought to
be a big help. The only trouble is
the work Involved. It's Just as hard
to do a 25-minute film for TV and
make it good, as it is to make
a good hour-and-a-half movie for
theaters."
Wayne foresees the time when
TV and movies will be wedded,
anyway.
"Some form of pay-as-you-see
TV has got to come," he re
marked. "Movies used to be the
poor man's pleasure. He used to
go out to a movie at 7 and be
home at 9:30.
"Now be has to go get the sit
ter and it's about 8 o'clock before
he gets to the theater. Because of
the double feature, there's little
turnover and no place to park. He
has to pay for parking. He has
to buy popcorn and pop between
pictures. The show is so long that
his wife is hungry afterwards, and
he has to buy a snack. By the
time he gets home and returns the
sitter, he has not only spent all
that money but also lost a good
night's sleep."
