BUCHAREST W-Where is the I euarded ring of big residences In
headquarters of the Cominform,
the world-spanning, secret propa
ganda' agency of the Kremlin that
transmits Moscowls revolutionary
orders?
Where is Ana Pauker?
These are two ol the current
mysteries about Communist Ro
mania to which American corre
spondents sought answers when in
vited here tor the first time in
five years. ' i
The Cominform's powerful gen
eral staff is supposed to be in this
Romanian capital. From Buchar
est instructions allegedly go out to
Red agents the world over.
We asked a Romanian official
where it was. He looked shocked
at our audacity and replied: "I
really have no idea." ,

was probably the headquarters of
the Central Committee of the Ro
manian communist party. The
Cominform, he said, is rumored
to be quartered in the country club
of a former oil company a! L.ke
Snagov. . '?...
All the diplomats really knew
was that the second meeting of
the world's top Communist bosses
met in the late King Carol's moun
tainside summer palace in Sinaia
in 1948, and that certain secret
meetings of the Cominform's staff
may take place In the English
style country house of a, former

pathian foothills.
Bushy-haired, Jewish born. Ana
Pauker, once the world's most
powerful woman Communist and
Romania's foreign minister, used
to live In a big house on Buchar
est's fashionable Chausse Kisselef.
More than a year ago she was
bounced as foreign minister and
as a member of the Politburo. Al
though a lifelong friend bf Stalin's,
she was accused of secret meet
ings" against the Red state.
A Romanian who claimed to
know told us she was sent to the
Kremlin after she was kicked out
of the government. There were ru
mors she was arrested or had died.
After her dismissal, diplomats
said, she traveled around Buchar
est In a big car, visited govern
ment offices and was in the Ro
manian Parliament last Decem
ber. She was seen on Bucharest's
streets in May. I
Asked specifically, Origtre Pre-
oteasa, assistant foreign minister,
told U. S. correspondents all the
rumors were "fantasy and idle
talk"
"She is in Bucharest and Is no
longer a member of the govern
ment." That was all he would say.
