The only thing that,, upon closer
observation, seemed to set this one
slightly apart from the mn of aft
ernoon exercises was that the
straight man was a prize fighter,
name of Rocky Marciano.
Rocky, a neighbor- explained,
was taking the day off from train
ing and had dropped down from
his camp several miles higher up
just in case some of the guests
woum like to see mm.
"Is It true. Rocky," he was
asked, "that you began fighting
when youwere in the Army be
cause there was a bully who was
making things miserable for every
body in the company ana the boys
asked you to take him on?"
"Yes, it is," said Rocky. "He
was a great big fellow from Texas.
So the boys began talking it up
and there were a lot of bets and
stuff about it in the camp news
paper.. First thins I knew we were
in the ring and I knocked him
out in the second round. I guess
that s when I became a profession
al fighter."
Not having heard the story be
fore, we wondered who the man
from Texas might have oeen who
fired Rocky with the ambition to
become a champion. His name
should be inscribed somewhere in
fistlana's halls. At any rate, the
small talk between the champion
and the man everybody knew con
tinued. In time, Rocky was brought
around to his knopkout of Jersey
Joe waicott, the first one at Phil
adelphia where he won the title.
"In the eighth round, see," said
Rocky, "I got a cut on my head
and they put something on It and
men tney doused me with water.
"This stuff, whatever it was, ran
down into my eyes and the next
thing I knew I couldn't see any
thing, I couldn't see anything from
