son from Charlotte. N.C.. hasn't cut
any swath though the division
since he started fighting a decade
ago but he's probably the only man
alive who has been knocked out
by both Rocky Marciano and Ro
land La Starza.
Here, then, is a fellow who should
know whereof he speaks when
comparing the merits of the pair.
He also was knocked out by Hein
Ten Hoff. the ex - heavyweight
champion of Europe. But that was
last night in Ridgewood Grove.
ONE ROUND
Marciano starched him in De
cember 1950. and La Starza, who
fights Rocky for the heavyweight
title on Sept. 24, sent him to the
canvas In February 19o2. Marci
ano's job was a one-rounder, La
Starza's a four-rounder.
'You should remember that Mar
ciano never did floor me," he said
in his dressing room last night aft
er Ten Hoff polished him off in
2:58 of a scheduled 10. "I cut my
eve in that flehl. But from my
brief encounter with him. Marciano
'looked like a pretty good puncher
to me."
NO HURKV
He said both Marciano and La
Starza never were in any hurry
to stop the other fellow in the
ring. They Just sort of felt hiin
out in the first.
Who would win the title bout?
No prediction.
"But that Ten Hoff," he said.
"He gets right In there and starts
swinging In all directions. He threw
a million punches.
"This was my worst showing yet
as a pro. I usually warm up
in my dressing room before a fight.
But I didn't this time because Uicre
was water all over the floor. May
be that's why I looked so bad. I
don't think I ever cot over the
first right he tossed at me. I'm
going back to Aiken. S. C. where
I have a job as a millwright in
defense plant."

seven. At this same point a year
ago he had a 16-6 record.
He has pitched 35 more Innings
and more complete games. He's
struck out 36 more than a year ago
while-walking only 17 more. He's
given up 39 more nits but he nas
a lower earned run average, 2.38
to 2.48.
The last 30-game winner was
Dizzy Dean back in 1934. Diz ap
peared in 50 games that season
but completed only 24.

The New York Yankees crushed
Detroit 15-0. Chicago whipped Phil

league batting record. He drove in
