Klamath Legionnaires last week
took the first long step toward
getting back In an old familiar
rut The winning of the Legion's
state championship for drum and
bugle corps.
Back In 1839. after the Klamath
Corps had walked off with the
championship five out of six years,
winning permanent possession of
the championship cup the Klam-
athltes turned the cup over to Sa
lem's Post 9 to be entered In com
petition again. And the Klamath
Corps disbanded, apparently to
give other state posts a chance
at the cup.
Early last spring, as Legion
naires here began planning for the
state convention held here last sum
mer, they decided to form another
corps to take part in the conven
tion. It was such a long shot that
no one even mentioned the possi
bility of recapturing the state
championship with the new corps.

Hlllsboro's fine corps was the de
fending champion and appeared
headed for more championships.
Hillsboro did win here again last
year and Immediately began prep
lng for the big third win this year
which would give them permanent
possession of the cup.
But the Klamath Falls outfit de
clared Hillsboro should at least be
challenged and almost nightly re
hearsals began here. At the Sea
side state convention last week al
most anyone except the Klamath
corpsmen would have bet you the
family jewels against a handful of
stale popcorn that Hillsboro would
waits to the third championship.
But the Klamath Legionnaires
blithely Ignored the form chart and
snappily took the championshp
away from Hillsboro.

here under leadership of Jack Ben
nor, Warner Pett (musical direc
tor!, Mike Elttrelm (drill lnstruc
tor) and Post Commander Oleic
Gallagher (drum major).

former employes, Lucille Ball and
Desl Arnaz.
The redhead and the Cuban are
making "The Long, Long trailer'
and are being treated like Eliz
abeth II and her duke. Fortunately
for MGM, the Arnases are not the
kind to take advantage of the hos
pitality.
When I saw the two top TV
talents, I asked what new things
were in store lor "I Love Lucy,
"What's the matter don't you
like the show the way It m?" asked
Lucille, and I think she was kid'
ding.
"Nothing new for next season,"
replied Desl. "We've got 13 of the
scripts ready now, and we ll have
lots of funny stuff with the kid
learning to walk and other things.
We have a wealth of material we
invent even touched yet.
"But I have a plan for the season
nucr next wnicn I nope I can ma
teriaiize. I'd like to take Lucy
around the world. Trie reason
would be logical enough: Ricky's
band could be booked for a world
tour. Fred and Ethel Mertz would
go along too. Think of the situa
tions we could get into in all those
countries! We could spend several
wfss at my home In Cuba and so
forth.
"We would shoot backgrounds n
all those places. Then we'd come
back to Hollywood and do the In
terlor scenes on the stage, as we
do now. The exteriors would be
screened before the audience, so
we could get the laughs on the
sound track. This has great pos
sibilities." Lucille and Desl have their fu
ture well planned. As soon as they
finish their picture, they'll take
off for a six-week rest at Del Mar
with their two children. Then they
begin the weekly grind of turning
out tne TV films. They get a re
cess from Dec. 15 to Jan. 15.

most heated political battles, died
today at nearby Betnesda, Md.,

World's Largest Painting
Spread Out On Graded Lot
BALTIMORE UV-The : world's
largest painting labored over by
128 artists for four years was un
rolled yesterday for the first time
since 1933 and found to be In pretty
good, shape.
The 18,900 . square foot canvas
was unveiled on an East Balti
more lot for William Haussner, the
restaurant man and art collector
who bought it at auction last sum
mer for 53,400. t . ' . ,
Yesterday was the first time he
had seen' the painting, called Pan
theon do la Guerre and created in
tribute to the Allied victory In
World War , I. , .
There was " a relatively small
hole in it, but the colors, costumes
and faces of the 6,000 life-size fig
ures in the panorama were in ex
cellent condition. t
The painting was last displayed
at the Chicago World's Fair and,
after a bit of travel about the coun
try, was stored and forgotten until
the auction. ,
