On Additive
WASHINGTON Ifl A professor
at Massachusetts Institute of Tech
nology Thursday disputed testi
mony by Dr. -Allen V. Aatln, head
of the Bureau- of Standards, thai
field tests of Uie controversial bat
tery additive AD-X2 could add
nothing to laboratory experiments
on the product's value.
Dr. Harold C. Weber, professor
of chemical ' engineering at MIT
told , the Senate Small Business
Committee:
It is 4dangerous" to base con
clusions just on lab tests; "It
could be pusslule" for ADOL2 to
show Itself useless In lab tests but
still work to good advantage ;in
actual application in the field; and
he "would want to see some field
tests' before he labelled the prod
uct "no good." '
Makers of AD-X2 claim it can,
double the life of a new battery.
Manufactured by .Jess M. Ritchie!
of Oakland, Calif., the product has I
Dcen branded by the Bureau of
Kinnnarnc a useless 2nd in seme
cases harmful.
pr. Astin was Tired from his Job
by Secretary of Commerce Weeks
on grounds he failed to treat Rit
chie's product fairly. Later he was
temporarily reinstated and . full
tests of AD-X2 were ordered. -
Meanwhile, the Small Business
Committee, headed by Sen. Thye
ifwvuuj.i Huuiurizea mix to make
its own test and Dr. Weber was
put in charge.
Dr. Weber said the- MIT test
covered a period of seven weeks
and involved experiments on 56
separate battery cells,, or about 18
batteries. ,
He emphasized that his tests pro
duced "no definite conclusions with
respect to the commerciaj value of
the product." But what he found,
he said, tickled his curiosity to
search further 'Into the possible
preservative qualities of AD-X2.
And. he said, he has been using
the battery "dope" in his own car
for more than a year. j
Dr, Astln told the committee the I
laboratory tests on the niodnrt I
which his bureau conducted were
aaequaio to prove its worthless.
ness. Ritchie contends the bureau's
icsis were not lair.
