captain of a log doesn't have the
rights accorded the captain of a
freighter, Edv.-s.rd Cutinan has
discovered. ,
The captain of the freighter told
the Coast Guard he had to bring
his big ship to a halt ln mid
channel between San Pedro and
Terminal Island last night.
He said a log ridden by Outman
was blocking his way, and Cutman
yelled. "I'm the captain of this
log and I'm not going to get out
ol your way." '
The Coast Guard sent cutter.
Gutman, 32, a transient, was ar
rested on a drunk count. His log
was beached.

Idol Farley Oranger has left his
thriving Hollywood career behind
to learn how to be a better actor.
It may sound like sheer folly,
! but the handsome young ctor has
wiggled out of his contract with
Sam Goldwyn, closed his home
here and departed for more stim
ulating climates. That doesn't
mean he won't be back He ex
plained his plan before he left.
"A couple of years agr,, I was
making a picture," recalled Orang
er, the typical Hollywood hero ln
slacks and tennis sweater, "I
stopped myself in the middle of It
and realized I was sliding by on
my previous reputation and the
tricks I had learned In pictures.
That wasn't good.
"I decided I should do some
thing about It. After all, I want to
be an actor as long as 1 can. I
know that I can't always get by
because of a bobby-sox following.
Some day a new guy like Tab
Hunter will come along and they'll
flock to him. If I haven't grown as
an actor, I'll, have nothing left to
go on out personality. Feisonallty

Granger decided he would have
to return to the stage in order to
gam more maturity as an actor.
Except for a three-year hitch In
the Navy, he had been in the mov
ies 10 years and hadn't done any
stage .work since, his middle teens,
His boss, Mr. Goldwyn, couldn't
see it his way. He would jive the
lad contractual concessions but
never the -time off to do a play.
This and other matters touched off
an Intermittent feud in which the
actor was suspended a number of
times.
