man who complained he had been
shot In the foot, dropped dead in
n physician's office Tuesday. Then
It was learned he had been shot
near the heart.
He was Juan Padilla, 24, o(
Tulare, Calif., a worker on the
Prunedale Ranch three miles north
' of here.
Walter Roloff, ranch owner, said
he had sent Padilla and another
worker, Arthur Johnson, to turn
off an irrigation pump. Johnson re
ported that while Inside the pump
house, he ward a snot and stepped
outside to find Padilla complnining
he had shot himself in the foot with

from their car.
At the doctor's office here, Pad
illa fell dead.
There was no foot wound, but a
.22 caliber bullet was lodged near
his heart. x
State police said they were In.

Oregon Medical School in Portland
said It would be uncommon but not
Impossible for a chest wound to be
felt as a foot pain, either because
of a sudden blood clot lodging in
the brain, or the culling oi a nerve
passage to the foot.

$29,820,097 for construction work on
The Dalles Dam was submitted
Tuesday by a comt'-ation of nine
Midwestern contractors.
The bid tor the third major work
project on the Columbia River dam
was well below the government
estimate 01 $36,617,520.
The dam. scheduled for complc
tion in 1060, will be the nation's
third largest power producer, gen'
erating 1,122,000 kilowatts. Only
Grand Coulee and Hoover Dams
exceed that outpai.
Tnc cost will be about 350 mil
lion dollars. The government has
spent about 19 million on the first
two work projects.

that Prime Minister Churchill is
in informal touch with the Rus
sians with the aim of arranging a
Big Three conference.
But responsible British inform
ants who gave out the story Tues
day said their information was
accurate and added: "Events will
prove the report correct."
A snokesman told reporters at
the Foreign Office's daily news
conference that Tuesday's report
was untrue and "I am authorized
to deny it.'
The report said American lead
ers were being kept informed of
the British-Russian contacts.

fire was first discovered about 3
a.m. When five people left in the
restaurant smelled smoke. It was
traced to the attic. The Vhole

utes. Parsons said It probably was
caused by a short in the wiring.

More Road Work Let By Commission
PORTLAND in The Btate
Highway Commission acted on ,
nearly lour million dollars worth I
of contracts lor highway construc
tion projects at its monthly meet
ing which ended here Tuesday.
Of the total, 1,296,000 worth of
contracts were awarded; 12,738.-
000 were accepted, subject to ap
proval of the U. S. Bureau of Pub
lic Roads; $909,200 were referred
to the commission's engineer, and
27,600 were rejected.
Largest project under considera
tion Tuesday was construction of
about three miles of the new Port
land Salem expressway. Rogers
Construction Co. of Portland sub
mitted the low bid of $478,685 for
the project. The commission re
ferred the bid to State Highway
Engineer R. H. Baldock for further
study,
Tne project would link Barbur
Boulevard In Portland and the Wil
sonvllle crossing of the Willamette
River, where a bridge now is under
construction, leaving about 20
miles still to build. Grading will
start on it in the summer.
