Ends Year
As Queen
LONDON If! Cannons boomed
royal salutes at sunny Hyde Perk
and London Tower Friday to mark
the end of the first year's reign
for Queen Elizabeth II.
In many other ways Britons
demonstrated their fidelity to 2t-
year-old Queen. Flags were un
furled, the troops paraded and the
press was filled with laudatory rei-
erences to the young sovereign
wno is expected 10 preside over
an Elizabethan era of enterprise
and adventure.
The queen didn't hear the sa
lutes. She was at Ssndrlngham
in Norfolk, where her father, King
ueorge vi. oiea one year ago.
She was making the most of the
nnai days 01 a long holiday be
fore her return to London sod
coronation duties this yesr.
The Queen and her husband,
the Duke of Edinburgh, attended
a private celebration of holy com
munion, motoring in cold but
bright weather from Ssndrlng
ham House to the little parish
church where her father lay in
state a year agb.

Slide Puts
Families Out
PORTLAND on Eight homes
and an apartment In Southwest
Portland were evacuated Thursday
night after a slide roared down s
steep, wooded hillside.
Residents of the area were sent
running Into the streets by the
msss of dirt that ripped up trees
and vines as it moved down tha
lw-foot slope.
There wss no damage to homes
and no one was hurt, although
debris was piled up In the yards
01 three homes. Firemen and po
licemen ordered the evacuation on
S. W. Corbett Avenue and B. W.
View Point Terrace because of the
danger of additional slides.
The hillside was owned by R. O.
Oarrett, s building contractor who
said he had planned to build three
homes there. The slide changed his
plans. He previously had built
home for his son-in-law, B. R.
Glllasple, above the slide area. The
OUlaspies were among those evac
uated. Recent heavy rains have caused
a number of lesser slides In the
city.
