RIDES
389TH
By GKNK PLOWDKN
MIAMI, Fl. i The turl world
Wednesday hailed a new riding
champion In apprentice Jockey
Tony Despjrito, who hoped to boost
his record ol 389 winners lor the
year still higher on the Unal pro
gram. The dark-eyed. 18-year-old Law
rence, Mass.. boy rode four win
ners In seven mount at Tropical
Park Tuesday to belter the old
mnrk ol 388 set by Walter Miller
back in 1906.
Joe Culinone and Willie Shoe
maker equalled Miller's record in
1950 but few other Jockeys have
approached It In all racing his
tory. Only eight American jockeys
have ridden more than 300 win
ner in a year.
OeSpirito. quiet, solt-spokeh son
ol an unemployed textile worker,
became the darling ol race fol
lowers In less than 12 lull months
of riding.
ILL - Ll'CK
He broke the record with skill
and determination in spite of Ill
luck that followed him most ol the
way.
Jockeys are permitted to ride
two races before applying lor a
license and Tony, who pronounces1
his surname with emphasis on
"Spirit," rode his Ilrst race at
Rockingham Park. Salem. N. H.,
in the fall o( 1951.
Alter watching that elfort. stew
ards told him he had much to learn
and couldn't ride any more for the
presenl.
His lather. Anthony. Sr.. took
him to Florida and on Jan. 22,
1952, young Tony brought in his
first winner on Oreat Shuffle.
NOT READY
Again, stewards told him he
wasn't ready.
J. H. Carr, his contract employ
er, gave him some pep talk and
jockey Bob Wholey of Pittsburgh
added additional tutoring.
DeSpirito got hi license and W'on
10 races at Sunshine Park before
the track closed and he headed
north.
Jockey Louis Olah probably
saved Tonya life at Lincoln
Downs, R. I., on April 17 when
the saddle on his mount slipped
and Olah kept him Irom being
thrown to the track. Tony finished
the race without stirrups.
He became the eighth American
rider to bring in 300 winners in a
year when he scored at Rocttng
ham Park on Oct. 24.
IIKAD INJURY
He suffered a head Injury when
thrown from his mount at Lincoln
Downs on Nov. 14 and missed six
days of racing.
He rode four winners at Tropical
Monday and shaltered the record
with four more Tuesday, hanging
up his 389th in the ninth and final
race on King's Quest.
Ironically, Marshall Cassidy, as
sistant secretary of the Jockev club
and a Tropical Park steward, pre
sented DeSpirito with a sliver plate
In the winner's circle. Cassidy was
one ol the stewards who had .sus
pended him earlier in the month.
Miller I in a New York sani
tarium but Culinone and Shoe
maker were quick to extend con
gratulations and both praised Des
plrlto. "I'm glad he did It." they both
declared. Culnione. competing
against him at Tropicnl Park, said
he 1 "a good rider."
