Man Survives Night in Chill Swamp

clung to mangrove bushes in Angel

ami for more than 28 hours dur
ing some of Florida's coldest
weather was reported in "satis
factory" condition in Veterans Hos
pital today.
Fred Tyzzer Jr., released from
a hospital only two weeks ago
with a badly burned hand, sur
vived a night of 35-40 degree cold
stripped to his undershorts.
The 38-year-old Navy veteran
watched while a Coast Guard FBY
and a helicopter flew overhead in
search for him, but couldn't at
tract their attention. Finally, the
Coast Guard abandoned the search
and said he presumably had
drowned.
' Tyzzer lost his balance and fell
from the tugboat Logan about 11
a.m. Tuesday between Cape Flori
da and Cutter Bank. He was res
cued late yesterday by Capt.
Cleveland Knowles aboard his
lisning vessel.
"Because of the cold weather,
I had plenty of clothes on when I
fell off the boat," Tyzzer said.
"Thanks to my training as a senior
Red Cross lite saver, I was able
to peel off my shoes, two pairs
Of socks, two pairs of pants,
sweater and jacket."
Capt. George Baron, skipper of
the tugboat didn't notice that his
only crewman had disappeared
until half an hour later.
Tyzzer watched the tug until it
moved out of sight, then shed his
clothing and swam three or four
miles to the mangrove swamp. All
night long he buried his face in
the mangrove roots to ward oil
the chiu northwest wind.
Knowles, who has fished the
area lor 10 years, was headed for
port when he saw Tyzzer waving
a mangrove twig. -
Tyzzer estimated he reached the
swampy, mangrove-studded shore
about 1 p.m. He waved vainly at
passing boats and the helicopter.
He waded through knee-deep
mud toward Angel Fish Creek,
which divides Key Largo, but no
boats came up the channel before
