Scientist Sees Peaceful Use of -H-Bomb Materials

Ar Science Reporter
WASHINGTON Ofi An atomic
scientist came up today with the
first publlo explanation on how
hydrogen bomb material might
be tamed for peaceful uses, such
as power:
Electricity discharged through a
thin wire might set off a "slowed
don" read ion which could be
controlled for various purposes,
Or. George Gamow told a re
ported. He said there are other 'theo
retically possible" techniques that
might be even better, but he de
clined to ampliiy.
' Up until recently the general
view, including that of most top
scientists, has been that atomic
energy could be released from hy
drogen only through a terrific ex
plosion.
Gamow, Internationally-known 1
theoretical physicist who serves j
as a consultant to the Atomic En.
ergy Commission, made the com-1
ments when asked about a recent :
statement by Sen. Hickenlooper :
(R-Iowai. a member of the Joint !
congressional atomic committee.
Hickenlooper said that "the hv- 1
drogen picture contains some hope, !
in time, lor peaceful and construc
tive applications."
The acnalor'a statement pro
vided the first indication that
atomic oillctals see a possibility
of using hydrogen ruslon reactions
for something other than projected
H-bonios. The A KG has said noth
ing along that line.
The consensus of most top scien
tists has been not only that fusion
would Involve an explosion In Itself
but also that it would have to
be triggered by an exploding A
bomb, Hlckenlooper's statement was
described by the Federation of
American Scientists as "more
startling to scientists outside the
AKC than the 'news' and Illinois mv said It's MiiTosslim ot lioii rx.
