Successful Star Says Acting is Gamble

life is a crap game. It's all a
matter of chance whether you
make a mint or end up broke."
This realistic statement comes
from the distinguished character
actor. Leon Ames.
imM i the envy of his fellow
actors. He has protected himself
against a highly unstable profes
sion by a series of wise Invest
ments. The most notable of these
i an auto dealership in Studio
City, tn the San Fernando Valley
a few miles lrom Hollywood.

sett. "Is the brains of the organisa
tion," the actor remarked modest
ly. "He handles moat of the busi
ness details. But I help out when
ever I can. I attend budget meet
ings and so forth. I also sell a lot

she became famous and It's an

comedy star. Nannette Fabray.
were In the same gym class and
saucer-eyed Nannette remembers:
"Lana was the talk of the school
because she wore the shortest
shorts we'd ever seen. She rolled
'em up like a Bikini. And that
wasn't all. She wore absolutely
nothing under her middy blouse."
Now Lena's studio. MOM, Is
sprinkling Stardust In gorgeous
Nannette'a hair as the singing
queen of 'The Band Wagon" with
Fred Astalre. Ten New York hits
in 10 years. Including "Bloomer
Ctrl" and "High Button Shoes,"
should have brought Nannette to
the screen long ago but she aays,
"I was doing well and decided tt
would be silly to accept a movie
offer."
"Meet the people" soomed Nan
nette to stardom after she gradu
ated from the "Our Gang" com
edies. She was the siren of the
gang, but she still winces: "The
dog hated me!"
Every actor has his own special
reason for leaping into TV and
Ken Tobey's ts the chance to play
snarling, no-good heels.
"Csgney, Borrey. Richard Wld
mark all of them got started tn
real rough parts," red-haired Ken
told me. "I wasn't cut out to get
anywhere playing nice truyi. I
wasn't cut out to alt around and
wait for work, either.
"In 13 months at RK0. my only
pictures were 'The Thing' and "The
Murder.1 What would happen to
the know-how of a stenographer or
a pianist if he couldn't work at
his trade?"
Ken's due on the home screens
soon in "Dragnet." which he calls
"the best thing I've ever done,"
"The Unexpected," "Fireside The
aters," and other shows.
Thelma Hitter Isn't squawking,
but she's admitting that her movie
career hasn't turned out as she
hoped It would1 after the critics
screamed "Another Marie Dress
ier" when she clicked in "The
Mating Season" and "The Model
and the Marriage Broker."
The roles keep coming Thelma a
way at Fox. where she's under
contract, "but they are not the big

The rugged, colorful British star

bucklers because "I'm on the wrong
end. Acting Is the dullest part of
the business for me. Not that I'm
not delighted to be a star. But mov
ies aren't exciting to me when the
shooting begins. It's the prepara
tionthe casting, the sets, every
thing that comes before that fas
cinates mi."
The big buss at MOM Is the
performance of Dorothy Dandrldge
as a schoolteacher In "See How
They Run" Hollywood's first all
Negro dramatic flicker since "Hal
lelujah." And the Irony of It Is
that Lena Home, whom Dorothy
resembles, walked out of the same
studio because dramatic parte
were denied her.
"I started out as an actress,"
comely Dorothy told me. "But I
soon discovered that there weren't
enough Jobs to keep a Negro ac
tress going, so I turned to singing
I hope that '8ee How They Run'
will help break down the barriers."
It's full-fledged stardom at
MOM from now on for the youth
ful dance wlsards. Marge and Oow

Break" Is their latest and Marge
Is glowing over one dance routine
which tops all of their twinkle-toe
efforts.

Aside from his present dealer
ship, Ames Is angling another and
is Involved in a sasli balance fac
tory and other enterprises. So far,
he hasn't been forced to rely on
these interests as his sole Income.
"I figured out the other day that
I have had only five weeks vsca
llon In the past 13-years." lie com
mented. "I've been working almost
continuously since I opened out
here In the plsy, "The Male Ani

Ames went on to the lengthy
New York run of the show and then
signed up for hts service at MOM.
After leaving the studio, he free
lanced surcesstully and then de
cided to take a flier at the atage.
He sinned up to star In the Chi
cago company of "Th Moon Is
Blue." expecting to last a few
months tn it. The show played S
weeks In the Windv City, grossing
tl. 100.000 during the run. Even
though he had a percentage 0f the
prolits, Ames wss just as glad to
see me piay ciose.
He has returned to Hollywood
and continues working at his
steady pace. His current flicker Is
"Love 8ong" with Jane Wyman
and Kv Miuano.

"I'm glad I didn't make the big
money when I was a kid. I prob.
