Nylon Thread
Sewing Tips
Many people have been having
difficulty using nylon thread m
their sewing. Here are some sug
gestions that might be helpful, says
Miss Oelores Bracken, Home Dem
onstration Agent:
For the home seamstress there
Is only one size of nylon thread
available. This Is stie "A" which
la comparable In size to Number 70
cotton, but it has greater strength.
There are sixty colors and uiey
come on 100 yard spools.
To sew by hand , with nylon
thread follow these suggestions:
Cut the thread trom the spool
and use a shorter length than when
sewing with cotton thread. When
threading the needle, do not at
tempt to roll the thread to a point
as with cotton or mercerized
thread. Simply cut straight across
and put through the eye of the
needle. Take several back stitches
to tack the beginning ana enauig
of seams. Always cut nylon thread,
aon t break It. as it raveis easuy
and makes needle-threading dull
cult.
When doing machine sewing with
nylon thread, you win iind wese
directions helpful: Use a sharp nee
dle with no roughness or burrs. For
an all nylon fabric, use number 11
needle or comparable site. Use this
same size lor any sheer fabric.
For other medium weight fabrics.
use a number 14 or comparable
size needle.
The upper tension should be
about half as tight as for sewing
with cotton thread. Skipped stitches
are sometimes causes by too tight
tension.
Seams of garments In fabrics
from man made fibers lend to draw
or pucker at the seams. This is
true of the woven fabrics, but rare
ly ever of the knitted ones. To
avoid the puckered seams, choose
patterns with seams that are on
the bias rather than straight. Even
a slight bias helps. The up and
down, or wsrpurse, seams pucker
more than the, crosswise ones.
Nylon sewn seams should be
pressed or Ironed with low heat
that is at a low rayon or nylon
setting 360 to 275 degrees. For
fabrics that require higher iron
ing temperature, a damp press
cloth must be used or the nylon
thread will be damaged. Nylon will
take a higher moist heat, as with
damp press doth or from a
steam fron. than it will dry heat. I
"In the Ooold Old Summer Time,"
and the two favorites of the Span'
Ish - American War camps
"There'll Be a Hot Time In the
Old Town Tonight" and "Break
the News to Mother." In a second
flight the years from 1800 to 1963
are -spanned. Here is glimpsed
landscape even more familiar than
the Dreceding. tor tne uivil war
songs like "Tramp, Tramp, Tramp
and "Bailie tiymn oi tne ttepuo
he." the classics by Foster, sent!'
mental revivals like "When You
and I Were Young Maggie." and
spirituals like Oh! Dem uoitlen
Slippers" have become permanent
treasures like memories of home.
The third flight wings into a stran
ger era: 1776 and the beginnings of
Independence. Familiar landmarks
are "Yankee uoooie. "Mail Co
lumbia." and "Star Spangled Ban
ner," and the still beloved "Jua
nita." Then back to colonial days
to hear the strains of "Old Hun
dredth" and other great hymns,
the lovelv words and melody of
"All through the Night." and the
ever-haunting "Robin Adair."
The 135 or more songs of this
attractive book were selected by
Margaret Bradford Bonl, arranged
for piano by Norman Lloyd, and
gayly illustrated by Aurelius Bat
taglia. The book is proof that in
the songs of the people the move
ment and spirit of America has
been recorded.

WONDERFUL
For those autumn afternoon teas,
try this suggestion. Add 4 cup of
orange juice and 2 teaspoons of
grated orange peel to 1 cup of
prepared mincemeat. Mix it well
and spread the combination on
about 18 crackers.
Then beat V cup of sugar grad
ually into 1 beaten egg white, drop
a spoonful over each cracker and
bake them In a moderate oven
about 350 degrees until the mer
ingue is golden brown (probably
15 minutes).
