MERRILL COACH Ray Rader (centerl huddles with his offensive and defensive tlgnal-callers
as the Huskies prepare for their state Class B quarter-final clash with Maupin Saturday after
noon. Back Johnny O'Neil (left) calls the offensive plays, while Guard Jack Handrickson
steers the dofense.
Tony Ross used his corner-stool
as en equalizer last night In a
riotous ending to a tag team match
that saw the Salem Slaughterer
and Jack Terry win over Tor Ya
mato and Mr. Sakata when the
two Japs were disqualified by Ref
eree Buck Davidson.
It was a berserk finish to a has
sle that saw Davidson almost too
tired to ill i ihe rms of Ross
Terry after he (Davidson) had ex
changed blows with both the Nips
when they objected to the dis
qualification. Each team had a fall when Sa
kata threw Ross out of the ring.
The Salem wrestler was kicked out
of the ring three more times while
Yamato applied the sleeper on Ter
ry. But Ross managed to stagger
back In the ring the fifth time
wagging his comer stool. He
slugged Yamato with the heavy
weapon, opening a huge gash on
the Jap'a forehead.
GANG
Both Yamato and Sakata ganged
up on Davidson when the decision
went against them.
But Davidson more than held his
own, decking both with whistling
Uppercuta.
Ross was sensational. After los
ing the first fall to Yamato when
the Jap propelled him against the
ropes and caught him In the neck
with a hatchet-blow as he boomer
anged back. Tough Tony evened
the count in exactly one minute.
He clobbered both Yamato and
Sakata with right hand and knee
uppercuta, then handed Sakata over
to Terry, Judo Jack applied the
sleeper on Sakata but released the
hold too soon aa Sakata waa re
vived In short order.
HIGH GEAB
The ruckus really shifted Into
high jrear when Davidson bad to
alug Yamato to force him to re
lease the sleeper-hold on Terry.
Meanwhile, Sakata was kicking
Ross out of the ring every time
Tony crawled back to the ring
apron.
But while the two Japs were
both being worked over by David
son, Ross managed to sneak back
Into the ring with the metal stool.
Groggy and weak, he barely man
aged to lift the clumsy weapon,
but swung It hard enough to crack
Yamato's head wide open. I
By this time the crowd was!

er Mack Lillard could not be
reached today regarding the pos
sibility of a rematch, a must as
far as the fans are concerned.
It was tops for mayhem, savag
ery seldom equalled in the Armory
ring.
BUSY
Davidson had a busy night. He
won over Billy Sandow in the open
er after the Columbus, O . lad
turned him every way but loose
i and broueht an uncle from Buck
; with a aouoie toe noia iur tue lust
fall.
That took S3 minutes. 45 seconds
and Sandow opened up in the
second heat like he'd finish It in
a hurry.
He had Davidson ready to cash
his chips in and rushed him to I prices, Lillard said.
the ropes for the cartwheel. But
Davidson held onto the ropes and
Sandow fell flat on his back in
the middle of the ring.
Before Sandow, stunned and grog
gy, knew what was going on. David
son had applied the surfboard. He
applied the pressure with a ven
geance and Sandow was unable to
return for the rubber fall.
Lillard announced that he had

2WSC FULLBACKS
DRAW SUSPENSION
PULLMAN. Wash. Ufi Wash
ington State Football Coach Alton
Kircher Wednesday announced the
suspension of two fullbacks who
have played important roles on the
Cougar squad this year.
His announcement, relayed
through the Athletic News Depart
ment, said Jim Head and Dick
(Blackie Bower, have been sus
pended for the rest of the season
as a disciplinary measure.
Exactly what brought on this ac
tion only a few days before Wash
ington btate meets California on
the gridiron wasn't made clear.
But Head said "It was all our
fault."
ATTITUDE
Kircher could not be reached at
either his home or office Wednes
day night. Some players who asked
not to be named, said the suspen
sion Involved the attitude of the
fullbacks toward warm-uD drills
during practice and followed Tues
day evening s practice session. It
also was reported that Kircher did
not act until after a vote of senior
lettermen on the squad.
"Kirch couldn't do anything else
under the circumstances," Head
guys I know and I'm sorry to see
him put in that kind of spot," he
added.
' Kircher predicted the Cougars
will do all right without the pair
in Its coming games with Califor
nia, Oklahoma AatM and Washing
ton, the news office said. Half
back Al Charlton was slated to
fill in at the fullback spot, with
sophomores Jerry Corrlgan and
Chuck Beckel as replacements.
Head, a leading ground gainer
for the Cougars during their up
and down fortunes this year, would
have another year of eligibility to
play, but Bower la scheduled to
graduate in January.
Head said he planned to stay
on in school and hopes to play
football next year, "but I don't
see how I can give an answer to
day on whether or not I will play.
Not so soon after what happened
at practice."
