Wide Range Perennials
Do Weil In Klamath Falls
By Mra. W. T. MYERS
Lakeihore Garden!
Hie garden Chrysanthemum U
a must In the perennial border or
flower garden because no other
perennial can produce the gorgeous
autumn colors in such prolustpn as
do our cherished garden Mums.
They are found In all shades of
color except blue and purple and
may be single, double, semi-double,
large, pompon or button sir.es,
in heighth ranging Irom twelve
inches to four feet. The hard
tvpes which bloom early are the
only ones suitable for planting
here, as the late varieties seldom
have time to bloom before freeiing
weather sets in. It is a good idea
to plant the tall varieties in spots
at frequent Intervals In the border,
with low and medium-low ones
here and there, in colors to carry
out the garden theme. They may
be grown from seed or cuttings.
but it is more satisfactory to use
divisions of roots. The best time
to divide and plant mums is in
the spring alter tney start 10 grow.
Divisions made at that time pro
duce nice clumps of gorgeous
blooms in the fall. Blooming late
in the year, they give a brilliant
farewell to summer.
GOOD HERE
Yucca sometimes called Spanish
Bayonet because the ends of the
sword-like evergreen leaves have
a sharp, hard point, bear lovely
lilv-like, bell-shaped, creamy flow
stiff stems which reach above Uie
foliage. They are very effective
planted eiuier as specunens or in
clumps, as are also the ornamental
grasses such as Pampas Grass and
Basket Grass.
The earliest blooming of the tall
lilies Is the Madonna. It is creamy
white with several flowers on tall
stems. Next to bloom is the Regal
Lily, blooming In early summer.
Croft Lillles also bloom In summer
here, while Tiger Lilies bloom still
later. Lily bulbs should be planted
In the fall and six or seven inches
below the surface.
The biannuals are those flowers
which live only two years and then
must be replanted. However, most
of them re-seed themselves and, if
the young plants are not disturbed,
you will have a succession of
blooms each year: for this reason
they are confused with perennials.
Among our best examples are
Foxglove, Canterbury Bells, Snap
dragons, and Rose of Heaven. Fox
glove or Digitalis is a biannual
' flowering herb. It Is a native of
Oregon, growing profusely in some
regions of the coast Kane, me
tall varieties may reach a beighth
of five to six feet. The foliage is
low rosette of course, mulleln-
. like leaves from which spring the
tall spikes or stems crowded with
large thimble-like flowers drooping
toward one side and beautifully
spotted on the Inner surface. Their
tall spires reaching above other
flowers like a lone sentinal domi
nate the surroundings and give a
startling effect to the perennial
border. Canterbury Bells Is a bi
annual bushy plant of medium to
tall In heighth and loaded m the
summer with large bell-shaped
flowers In colors of white, pink,
lavender, blue and purple. Besides
the single bells, there are cup-and-saucer
and double flowering
types, all of which are charming
in the perennial border. Rose 01
Heaven, a new name for the old
fashioned Mullein Pin. is a bian
nual, seeding Itself and blooming
for two years. It has scanty gray
foliage and attractive single red
flowers. Our much loved Snap
dragon is also biannual. Its habit
of seeding Itself, If left In the same
location Is responsible for the be
lief that It U a perennial. If the
ground Is not disturbed around
these biannuals so that the young
volunteer seedlings are not de
stroyed, they will appear the first
year and bloom the second year.

The Klamath Falls Council of
World Community Day Friday Nov.
1 at the First Methodist Church
In keeping with other Christian
women throughout the world, help
ing others.
In hundreds of towns and cities
across the country women are busy
packing layettes and children's
clothes for small youngsters they
will probably never see. Local
women are cooperating.
Big cardboard cartons in homes
and churches are slowly filling to
the top with diapers, baby shirts,
socks, blankets, small snowsuits
and sweaters and dresses. Some
new, some in good condition but
outgrown by more fortunate chil-
oren nere, tney are aestinea tor

for D P. and refugee youngsters In
Trieste. Belgium, Germany, Greece
and Lebanon.
If you ask these busy women.
"What about children closer to
home?" they will answer you, with
truth, that the church women work
for youngsters at home in dozens
ot ways in community centers,
children's homes. Juvenile court,
hospitals, playgrounds.
But there Is one dav a year.
they will add, that they dedicate
to children, and to all those in
need, in other countries.
That day Is the first Friday In
November, which Is World Com
munity Day for women In more
than 1800 local councils of church-
women. On Friday they will bring
their bundles of Infants' and small
children's clothing to World Com-
munity Day church services to be
dedicated as their gifts for world
peace. They will make their year
Jy offering, to be used this year
partly for medicines and vitamins
for children overseas, partly to
support their own Christian Wom
an's Action Program for Lasting
Peace.
The meeting here will start at
2 p.m. and it is hoped that many
packets for children for shipping
overseas will be taken to the
church.
All interested church women are
Invited.

We have mentioned only a few
of the most Important, hardy

Dlete description of other peren

catalogue or you may consult your
nurseryman about them.
To build a charming garden Is
a work of art. First, you must
have a plan. It can be either formal
or Irregular. The Informal lending
itself to variations In accord with
the Individual tastes of the
gardner. If a formal garden is
planned, decide on a color scheme,
then know your (lowers as to siie,
texture, blooming period and color
so as to coordinate ana narmonise
thorn with each other. An Informal
garden or border permits great
flexibility and variation so that
plants may be arranged to display
the foliage and flowers without any
noticeable planning. A well planned
garden and spring flowering bulbs
alter tney nave mushed blooming.
Cut off the dead leaves and stems,
then set out annuals which bloom
throughout the summer in their
place. Flowers from all groups are
needed to create an all season
friendly Garden of Flowers.
"In every flower that blooms
around.
Some pleasing emblem we may
trace:
Young love Is in the myrtle found.
And memory In the nansv's grace.
Peace in the olive-branch we see.
Hope In the half shut iris grows.
In the bright Laurel victory!
And lovely woman In the rose."
