ground explosion ripped through
the 180-foot deep shaft of an aban
doned gold nunc near here. ,
Stale police Identified the victims
as; John Wllczynskl, of Chicago;
Pat Chavaller, 32: of Herron; and
tnree brothers. Zcxe 41. Henry. 37.
and Bernard Donkc, 44, all of
ncrron.
A sixth man, John Fasluszka, of
Chicago, miraculously escaped In
jury In tne blast.
Police said the bodies of Chava
ller and Zcke Donke were still
entombed at the bottom of Die
water filled shaft.
Searchers recovered the bodies
of the other victims which had
been hurled some 300 feet from the
Mialt entrance by the force of the
blast.
Pafctuszkg told police Chavaller
and Zcke Zdonke had gone down
Into the shaft to check on the re
moval of water pumps used to
drain the abandoned mine. He said
he and the others were grouped
around the shaft entrance when the
explosion occurred.
State police said Pastus.ka did
not know the cause of the explosion.
