(This Is the third of four articles
about the candidates In neat Tues
day's general election In Oregon.)
By PAI'I, W. HAflVEV Jr.

cont:rcislonnl nice l one of the
oddest Oregon has seen In many
years.
Kirh candidate In this district,
which Is one of the country's big
gest In area, shies away from
claiming; victory lor hlnuelf. That
Is something unusual in Itself.
On a recent awing through East
ern Oregon. I was mirprlred to
henr ihc good things Hepubllcana
were saving about John O. Jones,
l a Grande, the Democratic candi
date, and the nice things the Demo
crats are saying about Stale Ben.
Bum Coon, Baker, the Republican.
I'arty lines are all mixed up. too.
Coon Is drawing some Democratic
'support, while Jones has some
Republicans he can count on.
Oregon'a four congressmen are
Republicans. The Democrats think
that Eastern Oregon'a 2nd district
Is the place where they have the
best chnnce to gain a neat. But
the contest looks very close. Every
body agreca to that.
This is the seal once neid oy
Democrat Walter Pierce, the Dem
ocratic fonnrr governor -who now
lives in Balem. Pierce was con
uressman from JM3 lo 1813, when
he was beaten uy Lowell biocie
man. the Pendleton rancher who
now Is leaving h's congressional
po.it after holding it for 10 years.
ine main issue in mis uisinci
1st Should the federsl government
build Hell's Canyon dam on the
Snake River?
Jones says yes, and Coon says
no.
Jones, who la campaigning 1J
hours a day, has made the question
of federal multi-purpose dams the
big Issue. He's all for them. Coon
favora private power company de
velopment of the Snake River, but
he doesn't talk about It very much.
Jone-t says he has made efforts
to get Coon Into a debate, but he
claims Coon won't meet him.
Jones defeated Stale Etn. Ben
Mu;a. The Dalles, for the Demo
cratic nomination last May, and
Musa 1. going all out, for Jones
now.
Coon arored surprise victory
In the primary over Slate Rep.
Olles French. Moro publisher and
veteran legislator.
French supports Coon, aertlng
"he is not an economic mendicant
who hns followed orders all his
life. Coon Isn't much of a talker
but very much a doer."
wnne J o n e s la campaigning
harder. Coon has a bigger organi
sation, so Coon doesn't have lo
work quite to hard.
Both men are new io pontics.
Coon has been Baker County
livestock rancher lor 22 years. He
has been active In livestock organ
izations, and served In Uic State
Senate In 1651.
In Hie Senate. Coon didn't talk
much, but he was chairman of the
linportunt Senate Agriculture Committee.
Coon has an engaging personal
ity. With a ruddy complexion and
a cowbov drawl, his personality
apparently won the primary for
him.
Jones has a good personality, too.
He's had a varied career. Including
director of displaced persons camps
in Germany, personnel training
expert for Industries, a dairy
rancher, r-chool teacher and radio
station manager.
Both men have received help
from the presidential candidates
and. In a way, the congressional
battle is a reflection of the No. 1

Coon rode on the Elsenhower
train through Western Oregon,
which gave him a little publicity.
But Jones' help from Adlal Steven
son was more direct.
Jones Introduced Stevenson at
the lutter's recent appearance In
Pendleton and gave Jones a good
boost. Some political writers were
trying to figure why Stevenson
chose Pendleton for his only Ore
gon appearance on his recent West
ern lour.
The anrwer they came up with
was that Stevenson wanted to help
Jones, where the Democrats have
the best chance in Oregon of gain
ing a congressman.
In the first district, which In
cludes Northwest Oregon, Rep.
Walter Norblad, Astoria lawyer, is
a big favorite to win for a fifth
lerm. His Democratic opponent is
Robert B. Jones, Clackamas
County Commissioner.
This Jones, who is 37 years old,
hasn't put on much of a campaign.
He calls himself a Roosevelt Demo
crat, and claims Oregon's delega-
l lion to Congress hasn't managed to
win from the leaerai government
all that the state's entitled to.
Norblad, not very worried, hasn't
done much campaigning, either.
His main argument is that he has
enough seniority on congressional
committees to be of greater ser-
Ivlce to the state.

fashion. A sliding glass wall separates it from dining room.. The
living room gains added ceiling height by being dramatically
dropped down one step from the rest of the house. One of the
two baths is tjtven two entrances to make it convenient to the
