Process Recovers Straw
The spraying of molasses or mo
lasses and urea (proniol) on fields
of alside straw, barley straw, and
other varieties of roughage feeds
will probably provide an economi
cal method of feeding cattle this
year in the Tulelake Basin, says
Ken Baghott, farm advisor.
This feeding method has proven
profitable in the past by enabling
farmers to improve palatabiliiy
and consumption of low quality
roughage, and provide livestock
witli a concentrate supplement.
This method also has the advan
tage of recovering unpalatable nat
ural forage that otherwise would
be lost. The economy of feeding
in this manner is important in
view of the labor saving it in
volves, and also important is the
food value of low quality roughage.
Experience has proven that fields
are well cleaned of all roughage.

lasses, and that there is little or
no loss through trampling or scat
tering. The farm advisor mentions that
Promol contains an economical
source of protein, and is guaran
teed to contain not less than 3
per cent protein equivalent. Tests
have shown that urea may be ef
fectively utilised when the ration
contains adequate amounts of good
quality carbohydrates, or nigh
grade forage crops. The optimum
amount of urea in any protein
supplement for direct feeding Is

' Using lodgepole pine for manu
acture of hard boards and veneers
has tremendous possibilities, ac
cording to Karl Bollerslev, wood
technologist at the Oregon Forest
Products laboratory.
- Preliminary studies at the lab
oratory have produced a lodgepole
pine bard board that is at least
equal in strength to. Douglas-fir
boards. Lodgepole pine boards are
noticeable hght colored. Including
bark in the fiber hardly changes
the hardboards color, Bollerslev
aid.
Tnis would be a third major use
of lodzeDole nine Since it ts a
small tree its uses are somewhat
limited. Lodgepole pine is now
mainly used lor lumber and pulp
wood, Bollerslev continued.
In Oregon, there are more than
1.250.000 acres of lodgepole pine,
containing 800.000.000. board feel ol
lumber. This is a large enough
amount to insure an adequate sup
ply for lodgepole-using industries.
Laboratory research on making
lodgepole pine hardboards has
been by the dry process method.
The waterless method would be
more desirable In Eastern and Cen
tral Oregon regions where the w
ter supply is limited, Bollerslev
added.
. In another exploratory study, the
laboratory, which is located on the
Oregon biale college campus, has
tested the peeling characteristics
01 smau-iog lodgepole pine. Boner
slev found it preferable to heat the
logs in boiling water before peel
lng to satisiactorily soften the
hard knots.
A major obstacle In peeling
loogepole pine lor veneer is the
mechanical difficulty in feeding the
lathe with small logs. Lathe-peeled
jIodgepole-'pine presents a veneer
rwita a . -straigiil-row knot pattern.
Either this can be used as a nat
ural veneer design like knotty pine
or the symmetrical-knot row can
be clipped out for clear veneers.
Lodgepole pine studies have been
undertaken at the request of three
Bend groups. Similar studies will
be extended to white fir, ponderosa
pine, hemlock and several hard
wood species. Including alder.

Baghott says that because of its
high concentration and the unde
sirabilitv of excessive ingestion by
the animal, urea must be blended
with other feedstuifs before feed
ing. The paunches of ruminants, such
as sheep snd cattle, teem with
micro-organisms which can use
nonprotein nitrogen for their
growth and multiplication. The mi
crobes from the rumen, when cul
tured, washed, and fed as a source
of protein, were found to be di
gested and to have good biological
value. Feeding promol could be a
very cheap source ot protein, ior
1-7 pound of urea contains the ni-1
trate equivalent to 1 pound of cot- i
ton seed cake.
Using approximately current
prices, five cents worth of cotton-1
seed cake mignt oe replaced oy
7-10 cents worth of urea. The urea,
however, has no energy value, and
to maintain the same digestible
nutrient intake, and rate of gain,
as when one pound of cake is
fed the addition of one pound of
barley would be advisable.
The combination of urea with
molasses as a cheaper source of
energy might be more favorable
under Tulelake conditions, being
sere favorable CvCECrnlcslly, as
well as providing a safe and pala
table vehicle for feeding urea. It
also favors bacterial activity In
the rumen.
Farmers in the Tulelake Basin
who have alsike clover straw, or
barley straw may find it deslreable
to spray promol on these low
grade feeds. Due to the surpjus
amount of molasses in the U. 6..
the price of molasses and promol
is considerable below most feed
concentrates.
The farm advisor Is encouraging
fanners to save by making the
most use of this low grade rough
age. and to improve the roughage
quality by the use of promol and
molasses spraying on roughage
Drior to feeding. Such prices as
these will enable farmers to save
considerably and to have better
quality feed. Prices of this pro
duct delivered to Tulelake varies
from S18.ll per short ton may be
obtained in small amounts, wmie
it is M.0S per short ton in quan
tities of 20 tons.
