NEW YORK I The American
Basketball League, which has been
in operation since Is at the
crossroada today In Its aliuggle for
survival.
The venerable loop will decide
at llx annual meeting of the own
ers tomorrow whether to permit
some of the players who have been
involved in the ba.skclball scandals
to play lor lla teams.
But no matter what la decided,
Jolin J. O'Brien, the wealthy bua
inessman, who has been president
all through the years, will step
down. O'Brien la upset over the
thought of Uie league permitting
the players to Join the teams.
KICiN SPIVEY
Some of the members have been
reported In favor of opening the
doors to the players and Eirnlra
went so far as to sign Bill Bpivey,
a former All-America at the Uni

Three others Alex Oroia and
Ralph Beard, who played with the
Indianapolis Olympians of the
National Basketball Association,
i former Loni Island University
star 8herman White have been
signed by Jersey City.
"It would not be tair tor me to
say that my resigning has any
thing to do with the action of the
owncra tn debating whether to
hire these players," O'Brien aald.
"But In all Its history our league
never has been tainted and I
wouldn't want It to atari now.
Why, In years gone by. we have
banished players who were even
suspicious. We didn't need proof.

I think perhaps the Elmlra
team was misguided In signing

has not been found guilty of any
thing. In my opinion he still should
be barred. I am not being unkind
where these boys are concerned.
I would certainly help them gel

Unofficially, II appears that the
owners will okay the hiring of the
players. Hal Robacher, Elmlra

league to sanction It.
