taxes for the July, August and

earnings running 13 per cent be

ran around nine per cent behind
the 1951 quarter.
Stockholders have another cause
for cheer. In spite of lower earn
ings during the first half of thla
year, directors ol many corpora
tions maintained or raised divi
dend rates.

third quarter. Two others were
sharply lower.
One was a steel company, re
flecting losses from the strike.
The four small Iron and steel
companies to report so far showed
combined net prollta 49 per cent
below earlngs in the 1961 third
quarter.
For the llrst half of the year,
(Including the strike month of
Juno, iron and steel companies
had combined earnings 31.6 per
cent below the first six months ol
1851.
On the bright side, nine of the
28 with higher earnings show sub
stantial gains.
