movie star who hates to set. -
In my years of picking grapes in
these vineyards, I have talked to
every film celebrity. Nearly all of
inem navs some complaint. Some
hate the foldcrol that goes with
acting the autograph fiends, the
cranks, the lack of privacy. Many
hate their studios, the actors play
ing opposite them.
But I never found one who said
he really hated acting. Until I
talked to Ray Milland.
I found him on the set of "Love
bong," anere he was about to play
a tense scene with Jane Wyman. i 0t paramount.
If he hates acting so. how did he
get into that line of work?
'Do you want to know the
truth?" he asked.
"Certainly."
The answer was simple and
frank: "I was romancing s movie
actress at the time."
That was 20 years ago. and his
years of so-called sufiering have
brought him a fortune ana Holly
wood's highest prlie. His rye
soaked role In "The Lost Week
end" won him the Oscar In IMS.
But despite all this, he Is eager to
get behind the camera and leave
acting to others.

I remarked about the announce
ment that he will direct as well
as star in bis next picture. Millard
nas oeen trying to wangle a direc
tor's job for several years, and I
asked him why.
Why?" he snorted. 'Tor two
very simple reasons: 1. I think
directing would be much more
stimulating than acting; 3. I bate
acting."
This was no wisecrack tossed
off in an idle mood. I could tell
by the trllnt in his eva that h rf.H
hate acting.
I never have liked to act." he
explained, - it makes me terribly
self-conscious. Whenever I have to
go into a scene. I tense uo. I net
a free: In mv throat. I break out in
aweai ana 1 oegin to twitch all
over.
"I view each new picture with
dread. When I finish a day's work,
I ssry to myself, 'Well, there's one
less day to suffer through.' "

"So what happens?" he asked.
"Paramount was planning 28 pic
tures lor next year. 'I hen 14 of
them were aropped. and one of
them was the picture I was sup
posed to direct."
The actor offered his services
to other studios with scant results.
Finally. Bill Pine and Bill Thomas
assigned him to "Run lor Cover"
as director and star.
"It's a beautiful script just what
I've been waiting for." Milland
enthKsed. "A fellow came In otf
the street with a 30-page story.
Pine and Thomas read it and loved
it. The guy expected two or three
thousana. but they wrote him a
110.000 check right on the spot.
"It's s Western, but with a dif
ferent twist. It's as good as 'Ox
bow Incident" or better. The only
thing I'm not wild about is acting
in it. I'd father Just direct."
He was Interrupted by a call to
play s scene tn "Love Song." His
face grew sour and, he Walked into
the set like a boy going to school In
trout season.
