Mystery To Movie Crowd

crowd has never been able to un
derstand Montgomery Clift.
The quiet young actor irom
Omaha, Neb., flashed on the film
horuon five yeais ago. He was
an immediate sensation with movie
audiences and attracted a young
lollowmg thut was reminiscent 01
Frank Sinatra's. But he made no
elfort to cash In on his new fame.
He failed lo teed his following
with enough pictures to keep his
name in light. Instead, he turned
down script aller script. He acted
in only five pictures ui his entire
film career. Alter being away from
the cameras lor almost three years,
he Is back for another picture,
"I Corneas."

I persisted and pinned him down
on how he has managed his movie

fused because he felt he waa too
young lor the role.
"Unfortunately, there are a lot
of good parts that call for an older
man," he aald. "And I happen lo
look younger than I really am."
He'll be 32 tomorrow.
Clift declared that he will con
tinue his formula of picking and
choosing. If It's any consolation to
the film Industry, he has Just as
muon trouble finding a play. He
