BAN rRANCSCO I Stan
ord, the team that wasn't sup
posed to be going places in foot
ball this season, and UCLA, a top
contender from the start, clash in
the Pacific Coast's big game this
Saturday.
They share the high spot in the
conference, two wins . apiece.
They're undefeated with orer-all
records of 4-o.
The outcome of the Los Angeles
engagement means more to Coach
Henry "Red" Sanders and his UC
LA Bruins than it does to Chuck
Taylor's point-getting Indians.
Stanford is tne defending league
champion and not eligible to re
turn to the Rose Bowl -where ft
was walloped last New Year'a
Day by EUnois. Conference reg
ulations prohibit two Pasadena vis
its in a row. ,
BOWL - BOUND -
The Bruins therefore are bowl
bound until side-tracked. So are
California and Southern California,
the other main contenders.
Stanford looked great for three
quarters while crowning Oregon
State, 41-23 last week. Second and
third stringers couldn't maintain
the pace in the last period. Three
fumbles by them meant three
touchdowns for OSC.
The- UCLA-Stanford set-to is a
toss-up.
. Other conference tames brim
together Oregon and Washington
at Seattle and Southern California.
and Oregon State at Portland.
Washington suffered stunning
losses in its last two outs, 32-7 by
UCLA and 43-14 by Illinois, but it
may have the manpower to out
last Oregon. Oregon's thin forces
fell apart before California's crush
ing attack after holding the Bears
to a 7-1 tie at ha If tune. The final
count was 41-7.
UNDEFEATED
Southern California, another un
defeated giant beat a aur-oacked
San Diego, Navy team 20-6 last
week and figures to take the mea
sure or uregon Bute.
California, also boasting an all
win record, should have no dim.
