Tension High In Cieu Prison Camp

Communists, ready to die at a
word from their leaders.
The air of tension and cold
hatred is apparent the minute
you walk through the high double
gates to the prisoner of war camp.
The steely attitude of the United
Nations camp guards is set by the
repeated warning of the camp
commander: "You must remem
ber these people are fanatics."
There are 10 compounds, iso
lated by double barbed wire
fences, in the big camp. Officers
who patrol the camp daily say at
least three other compounds are
tougher than Number 7, where 5
Chinese were killed in a bloody
tight with V. N. guards Oct. 1-
Camp authorities feel another
bloody demonstration is almost a
certainty if the Chinese decide it
would give them favorable prop
aganda weapon. All it would take
is a word from the Red1 leaders.
"The guards don't temporize
with the prisoners in any way,"
aays the camp commander. Col.
Richard Boerem of Ontario. Calif.
They have been told when tbey
re assaulted shoot."
The prisoners have been told
repeatedly that discipline will be
maintained with force of arms.
Camp officers want no repetition
of the situation on Koje Island last
summer where the Reds tempo
rarily gained the upper hand.
The Chinese Reds are well
clothed, well fed and housed in
the same type tents U. 8. soldiers
use. Concrete and stone winter
buildings are being built by the
prisoners. The half raised walls
were used as barricades in the
Oct. 1 fighting.
A search following the demon
stration uncovered several hundred
crude weapons.
Guards had conducted another
shakedown of the entire camp just
a few days earlier and cleaned it
out. But the weapons used bv the
Chinese can be made quickly. A
tent pole is easily sharpened into
a spear. A piece of barbed wire
wrenched from a fence quickly
becomes a flail.
The Reds have only to dig into
the soil lor their primary weapon
rocks. Tin cans sent into the
compounds now are scrupulously
counted. Thev were being con
verted into crude knives.
Camp authorities believe orders
are given from the inside. The
camp is isolated from outside con
tacts but it would be a simple
matter to flash messages at night
