Diplomat Sees
William Oatis
WASHINGTON W A United
Stales diplomat In Ciechoslovakia
saw the imprisoned Associated
Press Correspondent, William N.
Oatis. at police headquarters Tues
day and assured him efforts for his
release . "continue unabated."
The official, Nat B. King, was
quoted by Secretary of State Ache
son Wednesday as' saying Oatis
seemed to be in about the same
physical and mental condition as
wben he was last seen by Ambas
sador EUls O. Briggs.
Brides had reported Oatis ap
parently free of Illness wben he
saw him last April 30.
The newsman was arrested by
the Crech Communist government
April 23, 1931 on a charge of es
pionage, was later convicted and
sentenced to a five-to-ten year
term in prison.
The United States denounced the
charge and the conviction as false
and has been negotiating for Oatis'
release so far without an assurance
of success.
Acheson said Wednesday that the
fact that the Reds permitted King
to visit Oatis. at the Prague police
headquarters, did not seem to be
significant as indicating whether
the Reds would eventually grant
'him his freedom.
