the cement of time.
Having nothing better to do the
other day, I dropped in to the fore
court of Grauman's Chine-ie Thea
ter. Mingling with the tourists, I
browsed among the blocks of ce
ment that contain the signatures
of film stars past and present,
plus the Imprints of their hands
and feet.
Here, I pondered, Is the only
place where a movie star can
leave a permanent mark. Fame
is fleeting, particularly in Holly
wood. It was a stroke of his showman
ship genius when the late Sid
Grauman thought up the idea of
having stars, make their marks in
the gooey cement. Tourists never
seem to tire of fitting their shoes
into the footprints of the famous.
Me, either. My brogans are the
same size as Dick Powell's.
Ah, memories! Many of the
names on the forecourt floor have

cement. Their marriage proved
not as permanent.
Also recorded are famous me
mentoes of movie history. One can
view the imprint of John Barry
morc's profile, Betty Grable's legs,
Joe E. Brown's mouth, Monty
Woolley's beard, Sonja Heme's
skates and Al Jolson's knees. Also
the hoofprlnts of Trigger and
Champion and the bare feet of
Harpo Marx.
As with most things In Holly
wood, from the Academy Awards
on down, publicity has taken
over. In the past, stars were se
lected for the cement Immortality
because of their great achieve
ments. But now the selections are
generally made to publicize a pic
ture that Is opening at the Chinese.
Thus we find the names of Oskar
Werner, Hlldegarde Neff, William
Lundlgan and others who have not
yet proven their right to be record
ed In Hollywood history.
Nevertheless, the Grauman's
Chinese forecourt Is the closest
thing we have to movie archives.
