Says No Slump
WASHINGTON I A 1928-type
depression after the defense boom
is extremely unlikely, Presidential
i Adviser Robert C. Turner said
Monday.
Turner, newest member of Pres
ident Truman's council of eco
nomic advisers, created a flurry
earlier this month when he took
office and said defense spending
had virtually reached a peak. He
came to Washington from Indiana
University, where he was professor
of business.
In a copyrighted Interview In
U. S. News and World Report, a
weekly newsmagazine published in
Washington, Turner said:
"I don't think a recession Is
inevitable, and a depression of the
1929-to-1933 variety, or even of the
1920-to-1922 variety, strikes me as
being extremely uniixiy - lor
variety of reasons."
Some of these reasons he listed
as:
1. The people believe It Is the
government's responsibility to keep
the economy stable and would
demand and get action to prevent
any depression.
2. "Built-in features'' put into the
economy during the past 20 years
would provide consumer cash to
sustain demand for goods price
supports, u n e m p 1 o yment in
insurance. 3. High government spending
would continue, providing a bal
ance wheel to prevent any sharp
decline in economic activity.
4. Businessmen are "much bet
ter informed" and would not cut
back investment programs as they
did in the early 1930 s.
Turner said military spending,
as of last July, was at the rate ol
48 billion dollars a year. By mid-
1953, he said, the annual rate
should hit 56 billions. It would be
futile to try to estimate beyond
that period, he added.
